Stars Claim Redemption, Defeat Cumberland in NAIA

LEWISTON, Idaho ? The rematch fulfilled its billing as the Oklahoma City University baseball team claimed a redeeming 6-2 victory over the defending national champions Cumberland, this evening, at the Avista NAIA World Series.

The Stars (66-11) now face top-seeded Embry-Riddle (51-9) on Wednesday, June 1, at 7 p.m., Pacific Standard Time. The Eagles downed Biola, 6-3, earlier today.

Cameron Clarke lined a double down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Matt Sharp for the go-ahead run, 3-2.

Jeff McLaughlin tossed a three-hit complete game and improved his season record to 13-1. The junior needed to have a solid performance, as OCU utilized six pitchers last evening in 11-10 win over Lewis-Clark State, and the Sapulpa, Okla., native answered the call, surrendering three walks and fanning three batters.

The two offensive juggernauts were expected to explode at the plate tonight in the rematch of the 2004 National Championship contest. Combined, the Stars and Bulldogs (56-20) have produced over 200 home runs this season and feature two of the top home run hitters in the nation ? OCU?s Nick Klusaw (27 homers) and CU?s Donnie Burkhalter (now 28 bombs).

After six innings, both squads came up with a total of three hits and faced a 0-0 draw. Bulldog starting pitcher Jared Brown (7-3) also executed well on the mound, tossing seven innings and giving up four hits, three earned runs and six walks with nine strikeouts.

The Stars finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, as pinch-hitter C.J. Freeman put down the suicide squeeze bunt that allowed pinch-runner Scott Mitchell to cross the plate. Casey Neale also scored in the frame on a failed pick off at second, when shortstop Vladmir Munoz?s throw to third went wild, and Neale gave OCU a 2-0 nod.

Cumberland countered in the top of the eighth with back-to-back solo bombs by Phillip Cuadrado and Burkhalter. Both were effective in the Bulldogs victories over the Stars last season, and glimpses of their performances were demonstrated, as their homers knotted the game, 2-2.

Sharp led off the bottom of the eighth with a single up the middle, and Clarke followed with his game-winning double. In the last four games, Clarke has produced six RBIs, and two have been in game-winning situations.

With two outs, and OCU only up by one run, 3-2, Ryan Walker demonstrated why he is the Stars best two-out hitter (23-for-49, .469, and a team-best 31 two-out RBIs) with a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Clarke and Colby Overstreet, who was intentionally walked for the Bulldogs to face Walker.

Alexi Ojeda, running for Walker, scored the final run in the eighth when pinch hitter Derek Snell reached on an error.

OCU and Embry-Riddle have only faced once in history. The Stars defeated the Eagles 14-9 in 2002.

As the only undefeated team remaining in the World Series, OCU is guaranteed its fourth-straight appearance in the NAIA World Series championship game. Preceding the OCU-ERAU matchup will be Cumberland facing Lewis-Clark State in an elimination game at 3 p.m.

If Embry-Riddle were to win against the Stars, three teams will be left with one loss. In this scenario, all three teams experienced a bye, so the last undefeated team in the tournament, OCU, would get a bye on Thursday, June 2, while the remaining two teams played. That winner would meet OCU for the title on Friday night, June 3.

A Stars victory over the Eagles would allow OCU to face the CU-LCSC winner Thursday night for championship, with the "if-necessary" game on Friday.
