Ashley Sholer won the NAIA women's golf individual national title in 2006. Last year was a different story for Sholer. Struggling throughout the year, Sholer was unable to make the top 15 at the national tournament.
This season, Sholer is back stronger than ever. After helping the Stars win the Southern Nazarene Invitational and shooting an overall 153, she is this week’s U.S. Army Super Star of the week.
Sholer a junior from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, finished in second, one stroke behind the lead at Rose Creek Golf Club in Edmond, Okla.
“We’ve played it enough, so I know my way around," Sholer said of Rose Creek. "It’s not one of my favorite courses. The layout of the course is a links course, having little or no trees. Oklahoma being so windy is a hard adaptation for me. Back home it isn’t as windy.”
Sholer struggled with her health during the tournament.
“I was feeling under the weather and was still able to place second," she said. "The whole team struggled the first day. I would say it was one of our worst days, but we still pulled out the victory.”
Sholer’s favorite quote comes from someone she really respects, who has been to nationals four times as a golfer here at OCU. Kate Rydholm wrote a speech for the whole team before Sholer left for her first nationals.
The quote Sholer remembered and took to heart was: “Give 100 percent 100 percent of the time, and you’ll never fail."
Sholer said, “It helped put things in perspective and took away the nerves. I was very focused and at ease taking it a hole at a time. It wasn’t until the end of the round that I realized that I had shot such a low round. Winning was really in sight.”
Sholer continues her quest for an individual title Oct. 1-2 at Lincoln Park for the Oklahoma City Women’s Classic presented by Integris Heart Hospital.
