OCU knocks off Northwood 85-77

Stars overcome eight-point deficit

CEDAR HILL, Texas – Oklahoma City University took an 85-77 victory over Northwood (Texas) on Saturday at the Nutting Hill Arena Building.
Jamaal Crayton, a senior from Augusta, Ga., provided OCU with his season highs in scoring (23), rebounding (nine) and steals (four) to go with four assists. The Stars improved to 11-8, 7-5 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
OCU erased an eight-point deficit to gain its third road victory of the season. The Stars sank 27 of 30 free throws as Crayton hit 10 of 11 free-throw tries.
"It was a very well fought game," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. "Our guys stayed together and found a way to get the win in a very tough environment."
Dorion Gigger, a freshman from Moore, Okla., scored a season-high 16 points while going 6-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 on free throws with four rebounds for the Stars. R.J. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., tallied 13 points, three rebounds and two steals, while Kaleb Smith, a senior from Choctaw, Okla., posted 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals for OCU.
Smith, Crayton and McGhee canned treys to stake OCU to a 9-0 early lead. Dema Sane downed a pair of free throws to give the Stars an 11-1 advantage at the 17:02 mark of the first half. Northwood failed to hit a field goal until 16:15 to go in the first period.
Northwood rallied to take a 32-24 lead with 8:15 left in the first. Northwood used a 10-3 run to grab the advantage.
OCU seized the lead for good with a 9-0 run early in the second half. Gigger's bucket gave the Stars a 57-48 lead with 15:37 remaining.
Northwood cut its deficit to 68-67 with 4:37 showing. Smith responded with a basket, then Crayton had a couple free throws. Smith scored again to put OCU ahead 74-67 with 3:11 left.
Crayton's free throws gave OCU its largest lead at 83-73 with 45 seconds to go.
The Stars takes on St. Gregory's at 8 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
