Stars top Wayland Baptist 83-62

McGhee's 20 points help Stars to first SAC victory of 2013-14

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rocked Wayland Baptist (Texas) 83-62 and picked up its first Sooner Athletic Conference victory of the season Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars got a game-high 20 points from R.J. McGhee in his OCU debut and raced past the Pioneers to improve to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in SAC play.
OCU took its first lead of the game at the 9:15 mark of the first half when Terrence Walker scored in the paint to make the score 19-17. Jamil Donovan followed with a jumper and capped an 11-2 run by the Stars.
At the 4:14 mark, Terry Johnson scored off a Wayland Baptist turnover caused by McGhee and sparked a 14-5 Stars run to end the period. Back-to-back 3-point jumpers from Kaleb Smith and Chris Campbell helped fuel the run and give OCU a 39-28 advantage at the break.
The Stars scored 11 points off turnovers in the first half and held the Pioneers to 32 percent shooting from the field and 11 percent from behind the 3-point line.
Wayland Baptist's Markus Monroe threw down and dunk in transition to start the second half and cut into the OCU lead. Barry Johnson followed with a pair of 3-point buckets to further cut the Stars' advantage to 45-37 with 15:19 remaining.
The Stars responded with 3-pointers from Dorion Gigger and McGhee and rebuilt their double-digit cushion.
Three straight buckets in the paint from Johnson and McGhee stretched the OCU lead to 72-52 with 6:30 left to play.
Jamaal Crayton found the mark from behind the 3-point line and gave OCU a 22-point advantage at the 3:29 mark. Smith followed with a pair of free throws and the Stars sailed to the 83-62 victory.
OCU shot 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point territory while holding Wayland Baptist to 32 percent from the field in the second half.
McGhee led all scorers with 20 points and three rebounds off the bench. Johnson followed with 14 points and five rebounds, and Crayton notched 12 points and six assists. Smith added 10 points and six rebounds while Walker chipped in with 10 points and five boards.
OCU will return to action against first-year SAC member Northwood (Texas) at 8 p.m. Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
