Stars upend fifth-ranked Rogers State 65-64

Jackman's free throw brings OCU victory

Orlan Jackman tops the Stars with eight double-doubles this season.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Orlan Jackman converted a 3-point play with eight seconds left to give Oklahoma City University a 65-64 win over Rogers State on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Jackman, a senior from London, drove to the basket for a layup, drew the foul and sank a free throw to knock off Rogers State, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I men's basketball. OCU went to 12-11, 9-10 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Kendrell Thompson tried a lay-in as time ran out, but missed for Rogers State (20-5, 13-5 SAC). Jackman recorded his eighth double-double this season with 23 points, 11 rebounds and two steals.
Jackman took an in-bounds pass from Shane Rogers, who triggered from right next to the OCU bench on the decisive play.
“We were in a bonus situation, and with the play we called, we felt comfortable we could get close to the basket,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “Orlan did a great job. We told him to take it straight to the basket and don't hesitate. When Orlan plays well, we play well.”
The Stars completed a rally from an 11-point deficit. Rogers State led 62-58 with 1:34 to go, but OCU responded with a 7-2 run.
“Sometimes you have fortune on your side,” Phelps said. “I was proud of my team. They fought their way to the win. They needed this win. They needed this taste in their mouth.”
Charlton Jones, a junior from Katy, Texas, chipped in 10 points, seven assists and three steals for the Stars. Thompson led Rogers State with 11 points, while Donald Williams added 10 points.
“Hats off to Rogers State,” Phelps said. “They have size. They have guards that can make big-time plays. They have confidence to hit those shots late in the game. We knew we had to limit their guards.”
Rogers cut OCU's deficit to 62-60 by nailing free throws with 1:23 left in the game. Maurice Rutherford dropped in a free throw at the 25-second mark for a 63-60 Rogers State lead.
Jackman knocked in a layup with 15 seconds remaining, and Justynn Hammond hit a free throw for a 64-62 Rogers State edge with 14 seconds showing to set up Jackman's game winner.
Rogers State's biggest advantage of the game came off Thompson's layup with 2:36 left in the first half. Rogers State led 28-17.
Hammond's transition bucket put Rogers State up 42-32 with 13:57 left in the contest. OCU climbed back into the game as Rogers dropped in a 3 to cut Rogers State's lead to 50-48 at the 8:40 mark.
Elhadji Wade hit a baseline jumper to complete a 7-2 run that put OCU ahead 55-54 with 5:04 left. Williams answered with a 3-pointer that gave Rogers State the lead until Jackman's bucket in the final minute.
Jackman staked OCU to an early 7-0 lead by pocketing a steal, breaking away from the Rogers State defense, then throwing down a reverse dunk. Rogers State answered with a 13-0 run.
The Stars visit John Brown (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
