OCU trims Wayland Baptist 74-72

Jackman records fourth double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds

Tim Morton produced 14 points and eight rebounds for the Stars on Saturday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University topped Wayland Baptist (Texas) 74-72 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars prevailed while competing in its fourth consecutive contest decided by three points or less. OCU went to 9-5, 6-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
Orlan Jackman, a senior from London, provided the go-ahead free throw for OCU with 1:19 remaining in the game. Tim Morton, a sophomore from Capital Heights, Md., added a free throw for the final margin with 11 seconds left.
OCU and Wayland Baptist traded the lead six times in the final 5:48 of the tilt. Wayland Baptist came up empty twice in the final minute. George Williams' jumper hit the front of the rim with 15 seconds left, then T.J. Jacobs missed a 3-pointer while heavily guarded as time expired.
“All I could do was remember all the 3s that went in for the other team,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “I just said, 'Not again.' Coach does a great job with them. I was impressed with Wayland Baptist.”
The 6-foot-9 Morton also nailed three 3-pointers, including a trey to put the Stars up 71-70 with 1:49 to go. He sank 3 out of 4 3s Saturday for his first attempts beyond the arc this season.
“Tim told me he could shoot 3s when he arrived here,” Phelps said. “I told him we need him on the block first. There's only one guy that big that should take 3s, and he plays for the Miami Heat.”
Jackman posted 17 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double and second consecutive double-double. Troynell Adams, a junior from Chicago, contributed 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, while Morton added 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals for the Stars.
OCU's Shane Rogers had 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals, and Charlton Jones compiled nine points, five assists and two steals. Jones, a junior from Katy, Texas, has collected at least five assists in 11 of OCU's 14 games this season.
Adams equaled his season-high scoring total of 16 that he scored at Mid-America Christian on Nov. 22. Adams scored four points against Lubbock Christian (Texas) in OCU's last game.
“I talked with Troy, and he probably played one of the worst games he's played this season Thursday,” Phelps said. “I got onto him and challenged him. Once he penetrated and got to the basket, things opened up for us. That's why we recruited him.”
The Stars shot 54.8 percent in the first half, but only 40.7 percent in the second.
OCU led by six points twice in the second period. Cory Nicholson's putback put the Stars up 54-48 with 12:52 left, while Adams' tip-in gave OCU a 63-57 edge at the 7:27 mark.
Wayland responded with a 10-0 run as Marquis Green's trey made his team's lead 67-63 with 5:26 to go.
Nicholson's jumper in the lane put OCU up 68-67 with 2:40 left. Jamie Eisinger answered on a triple to put Wayland up 70-68 at 2:04 remaining.
Robert Curtis provided Wayland Baptist with its final lead of the game 72-71 on a layup with 1:36 left on the clock.
OCU takes on Southern Nazarene at 8 p.m. Thursday in Bethany, Okla.
