OKLAHOMA CITY – Shane Rogers and Johnny Stephene have signed letters of intent to attend Oklahoma City University and play basketball for the 2010-11 academic year.
Rogers, a 6-foot-3 guard from Flower Mound, Texas, is a junior-college transfer who played for Collin County (Texas) the past two seasons. Stephene, a 6-1 guard from Boynton Beach, Fla., is a transfer who played for Liberty the past two seasons and will have two seasons of eligibility.
“Johnny is a valuable addition to our program,” OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said. “He is a very dynamic guard who can score in a variety of ways. He has a lot of experience against high level competition at Liberty and will make an immediate impact.”
Stephene played in 55 games for the Flames, averaging 3.1 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game, while shooting 44.1 percent from the floor and 69.7 percent from the free throw line. Stephene had career-high games of 15 points vs. Saint Louis and five assists against Coastal Carolina. Prior to his time at Liberty, Stephene attended LaGrange Sound Doctrine Christian Academy (Ga.) and Boynton Beach High School (Fla.).
"Johnny is a versatile guard who is a very capable scorer and shooter,” said Morrissey. “He has the potential to be one of our best defenders and on offense can create shots for himself and others.”
Rogers played in 63 games for Collin County, averaging 7.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He was a first-team all-North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference performer during 2009-10.
“We were immediately drawn to Shane because of his toughness and feel for the game,” Morrissey said. “He is a good shooter and an underrated athlete. He was a major part of a team that went 51-12 in the last two years in a tough conference.”
Prior to his time at Collin County, Rogers attended Flower Mound Marcus High School (Texas).
“He brings character, maturity, hard work and a high skill level to our basketball program,” Morrissey said. “He’s been a winner everywhere he has been, and I speak for our entire program when I say we are thrilled to add Shane to our team, and we are excited about the opportunity for him to have an immediate impact on our program.”
The Stars went 17-10 and advanced to the NAIA Division I Tournament last season. OCU is scheduled to begin its season against Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at Abe Lemons Arena.
