OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University added center Dee Proby formerly of West Virginia among its men's basketball recruiting class for 2009-10.
Guards Corey Bingham, Cesar Cuevas, Al Graham and Doug McKnight and forwards Nate Flowers, Jeremy McCarty, Cory Nicholson and Bryant Williams make up the rest of those joining the Stars this season.
Proby, a 6-10 senior from Round Rock, Texas, averaged 14 points and six rebounds for Angelina (Texas) as a sophomore. Proby spent his junior year with West Virginia, playing sparingly. He is known as a skilled outside shooter and passer.
“We're really pleased with this year's recruiting class,” OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said. “We believe we have a good balance of skill players, guards and interior players. We are looking forward to working with them in the fall to prepare for the upcoming season.”
Bingham, a 6-2 junior from Lynn, Mass., averaged 13.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.82 steals a game playing for Barton County (Kan.) last season.
Cuevas, a 5-7 junior from Albuquerque, N.M., took third-team all-Red River Athletic Conference acclaim with University of the Southwest (N.M.) last season. Cuevas put together 11.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.58 steals a game as a sophomore playing for Quinn Wooldridge, the former Southwest coach now an OCU assistant.
Flowers, a 6-5 senior from Waldorf, Md., became an all-Gulf South Conference selection last season with Montevallo (Ala.). Flowers put up 13.4 points and 8.6 rebounds a game as a junior. Flowers played junior-college ball for Redlands (Okla.) and Eastern, leaving Redlands ranked as a top-75 JUCO prospect in the nation.
Graham, a 6-2 junior from Jackson, Miss., earned all-NJCAA Region XXIII honors as a sophomore with Holmes (Miss.). Graham averaged 10 points, four rebounds and six assists in leading Holmes to the regional championship game. He also earned all-tournament honors in the region tournament.
McCarty, a 6-6 junior from Houston, averaged 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds for Redlands (Okla.) last season. McCarty spent his freshman year with Cowley County (Kan.), averaging 8.3 points.
McKnight, a 6-foot incoming freshman from Jenks, Okla., scored eight points a game as a senior for Jenks. McKnight led Jenks to the Class 6A championship game, scoring 13.7 points a game in the state tournament to make the Oklahoman and Tulsa World all-tournament teams. He made honorable-mention Oklahoman all-state and third-team Tulsa World all-Metro.
Nicholson, a 6-7 sophomore from Harrah, Okla., recorded 7.6 points and 5.5 rebounds a game for East Central last season. Nicholson averaged 14.1 points and 7.6 rebounds a game as a senior for Harrah.
Williams, a 6-9 junior from Austin, Texas, tallied 4.8 points and 5.0 rebounds a game for Kankakee (Ill.) last season.
OCU won NAIA Division I men's basketball championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
