OCU Moves into First-Place Tie with 2OT Win

McPHERSON, Kan. – It took two overtimes but Oklahoma City overcame a sluggish start to beat Central Christian 71-68 on Saturday and move into a tie for first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

The Stars stayed perfect in SAC road games at 5-0 despite shooting 18 percent from the field in the first half. OCU had two points over the first nine minutes of the game but the Stars's defense kept them in the game. Central Chrisitan led by as many as 11 points. OCU trailed 28-19 at the half.

The Tigers had a two-possession lead for most of the second half but Jonas Carlisle hit a pair of free throws with 3:04 to go and Jackson Hopps added a basket to tie the game for the first time, 56-56, with 2:23 remaining. Neither team scored in the final two minutes of regulation. Both teams were 0-3 shooting with a turnover as time expired.

OCU got its first lead of the game with 4:16 left in the first overtime when Brian Alexander scored after a Beau Tranter steal. After falling behind again, Jonas Carlisle hit a three-pointer for a 61-60 lead with 2:48 showing. CCCK got a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left to tie the score and send it to a second overtime.

Carlisle opened the final frame with a three-pointer but Central retook the lead but Carlisle tied the game with 40 seconds to go and Alexander got a steal and a dunk for the 62-60 lead with 25 ticks left on the clock. The Tiers missed a three-pointer with four seconds left and Alexander grabbed the rebound.

After nearly 30 minutes after halftime, OCU was not yet in the bonus and Central Christian had to foul three times to get the Stars to the bonus situation. Alexander hit one of two with 1.9 seconds to go and Central Christian's desperation heave from well beyond half court was nowhere close.

Carlisle and Alexander both had double-doubles with 19 points. Carlisle had 11 rebounds and Alexander added 10. Hopps had 14 points.

Alexander had six assists and four steals.

OCU heads west next week, playing Thursday at Oklahoma Panhandle State and Saturday at Wayland Baptist.
