Stars Win UC Ferguson Title

OKLAHOMA CITY – Second-ranked Oklahoma City University beat the rain and 11 opponents for a U.C. Ferguson championship at Lincoln Park West to open the men's golf fall season on Tuesday.
 
After rain delayed Monday's first round by nine hours, the Stars stayed on course for a win in the truncated two-round tournament.
 
The Stars finished at 22 under par and held off a late charge by fifth-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene by two strokes. Number 23 USAO was third at 18 under, followed by Hastings, No. 8 Texas Wesleyan and No. 17 Northwestern (Iowa) among teams that finished under par.
 
Philipp Perzl and individual entrant Jack Newton paced the Stars in third place at nine under. Lorenzo Santinelli was eight under for fifth place, Simon Jansson was seventh at five under and Christian Yanovitch was 28th at even par. Carter Ray was 32nd at one over, JJ Grimm was 40th at three over, Cameron Bozyk was 47th at four over and Luke Woods was 56th at seven over.
 
"Proud of these guys," said OCU Head Coach Blake Trimble. "They battled hard and played some nice golf in less than ideal weather. They are already pushing each other to be better and it shows. Really looking forward to the rest of the season!"
 
Perzl had 10 birdies on the day, mastering holes 11 and 16 in both rounds. He also birdied holes 7, 8, 13, 14 and 18 in the first round and holes 1, 5 and 15 in the second. Newton logged nine birdies, including holes 11 and 13 in both rounds. He was one under on holes 1, 7 and 10 in the first round and 4 and 14 in the second.
 
Santinelli led the Stars with a dozen birdies, including two each on holes 1, 4 and 13. He also birdied 6, 16 and 18 in the first round and 8, 14 and 15 in the second.
 
Jansson had eight birdies in his college debut on holes 7, 13, 15 and 16 in the first round and 1, 4, 12 and 18 in the second.
 
Yanovitch had an eagle on the par-5 13th hole and added birdies on holes 5, 9 and 17 in the first round and 6, 14 and 18 in the second.
 
Ray had six birdies, including two on hole 4. He also was one under on 7, 8, 16 and 18 in the second round.
 
Grimm birded hole 7, 14 and 15 in the second round and Bozyk had birdies on 7 and 14 in the first round and 10, 11 and 14 in the second. Woods had a first-round birdie on hole 13 and also birdied 11 and 16 in the second round.
 
USAO's Jaxen Brewer won the individual title at 12 under,
 
OCU returns to action on Sept. 14 in the Northwest Iowa Invitational.
