FORT WORTH – Oklahoma City stayed unbeaten in Sooner Athletic Conference road games with a 94-93 win over Texas Wesleyan on Thursday.
Â
It was career win No. 100 for OCU Head Coach
Sam Kohnke.
The game was tight throughout with neither team able to get a 10-point bulge and the Stars found themselves down 74-70 with 8:06 remaining in the game.
Â
A three-point play by
Beau Tranter and a three-pointer by
Jonas Carlisle gave the Stars a 76-74 lead moments later. After a tying basket for TWU,
Alphonse Muteba scored for a 78-76 lead with 6:23 to go. OCU led the rest of the way but never by more than six points.
Â
A Rams three-pointer trimmed OCU's lead to 89-86 with 19 seconds to play and the game's final 12 points were scored in that short span.
Â
Tranter was driving to the basket and was flagrantly fouled. He made two free throws for a five-point lead.
Brian Alexander missed a free throw and before his second shot, OCU was charged with a technical foul. When Alexander finally made his shot he iced the game with a 94-90 lead. TWU hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for a more cosmetic outcome.
Â
Alexander led six Stars in double figures with 21 points.
Jackson Hopps had 17, Tranter 16, Carlisle 15, and
Hykeem Hancock with 11. Jonas had six assists and Tranter added four.
Â
SaVaughn Smith topped the Stars with nine rebounds.
Â
The win kept the Stars a half-game ahead of the lead pack in the SAC standings at 6-1 in the league and 9-4 overall. OCU hosts Nelson at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
