This Week in OCU Women's Soccer

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City, after a postponement last weekend, faces two opponents this week with a chance to win the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title.

The Stars face John Brown at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and make up last week's postponed game at Central Christian at 1 p.m. on Friday.

OCU Notebook

Controlling Destiny: Oklahoma City has full control over its fate in the chase for the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season championship. Two wins give OCU the regular-season title. The Stars must win Tuesday to have any chance of the title and likely any hope of a top-two finish. USAO plays its finale Tuesday at Nelson and if the Drovers win, it would take two wins for OCU to pass both JBU and USAO. Mid-America Christian is also in the mix for a top-four finish.

Home for Round One: The Stars have clinched a top-four finish regardless of this week's outcomes and the Stars will host a first-round postseason game on Nov. 5. Southwestern Christian, Oklahoma Panhandle State, Nelson and Wayland Baptist head into the final week as possible first-round opponents for the Stars.

Last Game: Oklahoma City got its 10th shutout win of the season, a 3-0 win at Wayland Baptist on Tuesday. Kayleigh Haygood, Ali Daugherty and Abby Russell all scored goals and Aynslee Duffy and Yami Ponce added assists. With the win, the Stars improved to 12-1-2.

Ten Goals By Three: Three OCU players have 10 or more goals this season – Amelia Horsford (12), Kayleigh Haygood (12) and Yami Ponce (10). They are first, second and third in the SAC. It is the first time since 2012 that OCU has had three players reach double-digits in goals. In 2012, Meghan McMahon had 27, Allison Worsham scored 18 and Sheridan Homer added 12.

Homers: The Stars are 7-0-1 at home this season and outscoring opponents 46-2. The Stars average 5.75 goals and allow 0.25 goals per home game. Amelia Horsford has 10 goals and Kayleigh Haygood has eight on Brian Harvey field this season.

On the Road: The Stars are 5-1-1 on the road this season and averaging three goals per game. OCU is outscoring opponents 21-4 and getting 17 shots per game while allowing seven. Kayleigh Haygood leads the team with four road goals this season.

Coach Billy Martin: Since Head Coach Billy Martin took over the women's program in 2000, his Stars are 54-34-9. The 11 wins this season match his best season totals.

RPI: Oklahoma City isn't in the NAIA Top 25 poll, but that poll no longer carries any weight for the postseason. More importantly, OCU is ranked 20th in RPI with the 50th most difficult schedule in the NAIA. OCU's opponents have a .535 winning percentage and OCU's 12-1-2 record against them has the Stars in position for an at-large berth for the NAIA Tournament if they were to need one.

The Shut Down: Candela Blanco has a Sooner Athletic Conference-leading nine shutouts this season and also tops the league in save percentage at .872 and with her 0.414 goals allowed per game average.

Hat Tricks: The Stars have produced three hat tricks this season, with Kayleigh Haygood getting the latest one with her three goals against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Tatum Tallal got one on with three goals against Hesston. Amelia Horsford had a three-goal day in the win over Sterling.

Brace for Impact: Six Stars have recorded a brace this season, including Amelia Horsford (4) and Yami Ponce (3), who have done so a total of seven times. Kayleigh Haygood, Tatum Tallal, Chloi Thurman and Saizlee Carlton have one each.

Assistance: Fourteen Stars have contributed to the team's 44 assists this season. Kayleigh Haygood leads OCU and the Sooner Athletic Conference with eight. Saizlee Carlton has six and is ninth in the SAC Reese Roberts is tied for 10th with five.

Inside the Margins: This season, Oklahoma City boasts the Sooner Athletic Conference's best offensive and defensive numbers. The Stars average 4.57 goals per game while allowing 0.43. OCU obviously also leads in scoring margin at 4.14.

Winning Numbers: The Stars have won every game in which Amelia Horsford has scored a goal. She has a dozen goals in OCU's 12 wins this season with a brace on Saturday for good measure. Yami Ponce has 10 of her goals in the 12 wins. In OCU's 12 wins, opponents have scored a total of two goals and average under four shots per game.

History with John Brown: The Golden Eagles have won the last eight meetings and have not lost to the Stars since 2013. John Brown won last season, 3-0, in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament and 2-0 in the regular season – both at JBU. The Stars have scored one goal in the last 13 meetings against JBU.

Scouting the Golden Eagles: Tenth-ranked John Brown is 9-2-4 overall and 6-0-2 in the SAC after a 2-2 tie in Arkansas against Mid-America Christian on Saturday. Julia Lambert leads JBU with 11 goals and seven assists.

History with Central Christian: OCU has won the last three matches in the Central Christian series, including a 2-1 win at OCU last year in which Amelia Horsford and Yami Ponce scored goals. Horsford and Abby Russell had goals in OCU's last trip to McPherson, 3-0 win, in 2023.

Looking in on the Tigers: Central Christian is 3-10-2 overall and 1-5 against the SAC. Kaye Harrison leads the Tigers with four goals.

Goal Depth: Ryann Brooks became the 14th Star to record a goal this season when she found the net against Hesston.

Half and Half: Through 15 games this season, OCU has only been shut out in five halves. OCU has 23 first-half goals and 44 second-half goals this season. OCU is averaging just under three goals in the second half. That average is better than that of eight other teams' total scoring average in the SAC.
