Game Preview: Oklahoma City Men's Basketball vs Southwestern Assemblies of God

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Stars men's basketball team comes off an important victory at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday as the Stars gear up to host Southwestern Assemblies of God on Thursday night (Feb. 8) at 7:45 PM.

About the Stars       

  • Oklahoma City earned a big victory on Saturday which kept them alive in Sooner Athletic contention.  
  • The Stars enter with a 6-16 overall record while going 4-12 in SAC play.  
  • OCU is led by the duo of Avery and Brandon Jackson both scoring above 16 points per game. Senior Brandon Jackson comes off three consecutive double-digit scoring games including a 20-point outing against the Aggies on Saturday as he knocked down 11-of-12 free throws from the foul line.  
  • Avery Jackson racked up 18 points against OPSU and delivered in the clutch by clinching the go-ahead layup with 26 seconds left to give OCU the win. 
  •  Freshman Yorgio Golesis rounds out the double-digit scorers for the Stars with 10.6 PPG and sees his assist numbers creep up with six in the previous game and five coming against Wayland Baptist on Thursday.  
  • Beau Tranter has been another freshman making a recent impact on the Stars as the Australian native has scored seven points in each game while making back-to-back starts. 

About the Lions 

  • SAGU comes in winners of three straight which includes taking down undefeated #2 Langston 72-58 one week ago. SAGU currently sits tied for second place in the conference with Mid-America Christian. 
  • The Lions have won their last five of six games and come off a 23-point win over Central Christian where leading scorer CJ Hall went for 31 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field.  
  • Hall scores at a 23.2 PPG clip and has already brought in a handful of SAC Player of the Week awards up to this point. He is also the leading scorer in the Sooner Athletic Conference while SAGU claims the top passer in Alerick Hall with 5.8 APG. 
  • SAGU is paced by four double-figure scorers as Cortland Blake falls in right behind Hall with 22.0 PPG.  
  • CJ Kelley (13.5 PPG) and Noah Boling (10.5 PPG) also make strong impacts as Kelley comes in as the team's leading rebounder with 7.6 RPG while Boling dishes out 4.0 APG. 
  • SAGU ranks first in the conference in points per game as a team with 86.5 and shoots the best in the SAC from the field (48.7%) and from range (40.8%). 

Previous Meeting  

  • The Previous time these two schools met came back on Jan. 4 in Waxahachie, Texas where the Lions used a first-half lead to help them secure an 85-76 win.  
  • SAGU had five guys reach double-figures as CJ Hall led the team with 15 points and eight rebounds.  
  • Yorgio Golesis had a big-time game on the road as the freshman broke out with a career-high 23 points without exiting the floor one time. 

Series History        

  • After winning the last two meetings the Lions lead the all-time series with a 14-8 record over the Stars as the last OCU win over SAGU came back on Dec. 8, which was one of the last games played in Abe Lemons Arena in the 2022-23 season.  

What's Next       

  • Oklahoma City remains inside Abe Lemons Arena on Saturday as the Stars take on UNT-Dallas in a pivotal Sooner Athletic Conference competition.
