MCPHERSON, KAN. - The Oklahoma City Women's Wrestling team placed third in the 2024 Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Wrestling Championship on the campus of Central Christian as the Stars were led by Sophia Smith who won the 123 pound class with runner-up finishes.

Oklahoma City collected a total of 122.5 points, passing fourth place Wayland Baptist by a 30.5 point margin and fell shy of Missouri Baptist (2nd place - 168.5) and the champion Texas Wesleyan , who secured the first place bid with 179.5 points. 

The SAC has secured 30 allocations into the upcoming 2024 NAIA National Championships, while OCU will be sending 10 of its wrestlers to the national contest.

Sophia Smith earned the victory in the 123 class after a 31 second pin Danyl Pippin out of Wayland Baptist. In the final match Smith defeated Carolina Rios from Texas Wesleyan by a 4-0 decision to secure her first Sooner Athletic Conference crown. Smith also was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Year after finishing the year 15-3.

Avery Ashley and Marissa Jimenez solidified runner-up bids as Ashley won by fall (1:51) in the semifinal match against Joneisha Kennedey from Wayland Baptist before Ashley suffered just her third defeat of the year to Juliana Diaz from Missouri Baptist, losing by a 6-0 decision. Jimenez made it to the 143 class finale after beating teammate Makayla Munoz by fall in 1:57. Jimenez then took the loss to Mea Mohler from Texas Wesleyan in a fall (5:09) defeat. Ashley and Jimenez joined Smith as all-conference selections. 

The NAIA Women's Wrestling Championship will be held in Jamestown, N.D. on Mar. 8-9.
