ST. LOUIS. - The Oklahoma City men's wrestling team captured its third straight SAC title and its fourth in the last five years in Saturday's AMC/SAC Championship Carl & Doris Petty SRC on the campus of Missouri Baptist in St. Louis, Mo.
Oklahoma City secured the crown with a leading 175 team points surpassing runner-up Texas Wesleyan with 144.5 points who was followed by the host school Missouri Baptist who earned a third-place finish with 136 points.
OCU was led by its four individual champions in Caden Manion, Brayden Potts, Drake Vannoy and Keegan Luton.
Manion won his third consecutive 141-pound class crown after going 3-0 with back-to-back wins by fall before claiming the title in the championship round after defeating Zach Pena from Wayland Baptist by a 15-0 tech fall.
In the 125-pound class it was Potts, a freshman from Tuttle, Oklahoma began with a win by fall in 1:16 over Keith Samuel from Williams Baptist. Potts finished with two consecutive wins by major decision beating Gabriel Gray from Wayland Baptist 15-3.
Luton earned his third straight title after going 3-0 in the 157-pound class after defeating Joel Campbell from Missouri Baptist in the final round after a tech fall victory of 21-6 in 2:32.
Finally, in the 149-pound class it was Vannoy taking the victory with a 4-0 run after beating teammate Moses Torres in the championship match by a 9-2 decision.
Head coach Justin Ensign claimed SAC Coach of the Year honors for the third straight season as Ensign talks about the championship day saying, "Lots of ups and down on the day, but as a group we competed hard and I'm proud of our effort." Ensign gives much credit to the team by saying "everyone chipped in and I'm excited for the six wrestlers who automatically qualified for nationals."
Potts collected the freshman of the year award as Kaleb Stone, Keegan Luton, Drake Vannoy, Caden Manion and Potts tabbed all-conference honors.
