Game Preview: Oklahoma City Men's Basketball at Wayland Baptist

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Stars men's basketball team is set to visit the Wayland Baptist Pioneers on Thursday evening looking to snap a two-game skid and get back into contention for the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament.

About the Stars      

  • After picking up a big win against John Brown on Jan. 23, the Stars have dropped back-to-back contests against #2 Langston and on the road at Central Christian on Saturday. 
  • OCU enters with a 5-15 record and sits in 10th place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings.  
  • Avery Jackson and Brandon Jackson lead the Stars in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game each. Brandon comes off a 19-point game against the Tigers and has reached double-digit scoring in seven of the last eight games.  
  • Avery comes off a solid performance on Saturday after scoring a team-high 24 points while surpassing the 20-point margin for the fifth time this season. The sophomore continues to creep closer to the 1000-point mark being just 180 points away.  
  • Freshman Yorgio Golesis rounds out the double-figure scorers for OCU with 10.8 PPG and leads the Stars in assists with a total of 53 at a 2.6 APG clip.  
  • Clayton Jewell joins Golesis as another impactful freshman for Oklahoma City as the Austrailian native leads the team with 6.6 RPG while tallying up a pair of double-doubles so far this season.  
  • OCU ranks 11th in points allowed among SAC teams giving up 81.4 PPG. Despite its shooting woes which rank near the bottom of the conference, Oklahoma City ranks third in free throw percentage with Brandon Jackson and Avery Jackson taking two of the three spots on the individual leaderboard in the SAC.  

About the Pioneers 

  • The Pioneers enter Thursday's game 14-6 overall with a 9-5 record in conference play.  
  • Linton Brown leads the way in scoring with 18.1 PPG, fourth-best in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Brown has reached double-figures in 15 of 17 games this season after being held to just nine points against SCU on Saturday.  
  • Quentin Coleman, D'Michael Bellfield, Meikkel Murray, and Tahjae Hill all make up the rest of the double-digit scorers for Wayland Baptist helping them rank fourth as a team in the conference with 81.8 PPG.  
  • The Pioneers have been a solid shooting team from beyond the arc as the second-best three-point shooting team at 38.4%.  

Previous Meeting 

  • The last time these two squads met up came back on Dec. 7 when the Pioneers won big over Oklahoma 82-59.   
  • Wayland saw all five starters reach double-figures with Linton Brown leading the way with 20 points while D'Michael Battlefield put up 17 points and tied a game-high with nine rebounds.  
  • Brandon Jackson led Oklahoma City as the only one to reach double-digits with a game-high 21 points while sinking a pair of three-pointers.  

Series History       

  • Wayland Baptist has taken the last three meetings between the two schools as Oklahoma City leads the all-time series by a 46-27 margin.

  • Oklahoma City stays on the road out west as the Stars will pay a visit to Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday at 3:45 PM.
