OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University came even closer to clinching the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season softball title with a 4-0 win over Southwestern Christian on Wednesday at Dolese Park.
The Stars, ranked fifth in the NAIA, moved to 36-7, 23-2 in league play. The second game was suspended due to inclement weather with the Stars up 6-2 in the top of the fifth inning and will resume 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Dolese Park.
OCU and SCU were evenly matched with both teams achieving two hits before the Stars came through with a run in the top of the fifth. After
Brooklyn Mason's bunt single and
Lexi Duff's walk,
Grace Pollon, the sophomore from Saskatchewan, Canada, drove home Mason on a fielder's choice.
The Stars defense got them out of a jam in the first with a double play after the Eagles got two runners on early.
The Choctaw, Okla., native
Tiffany Paul came through in the seventh with a two-run triple as she went 2-for-4 on the game.
Amy Crabaugh singled and scored on Paul's hit.
Kaitlyn Jones, who walked, also scored. Paul came around to score on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 ballgame, which stood final as SCU went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
Crabaugh, Jones and Duff all had one hit for the Stars as Paul and Mason had two hits each. Two RBIs went to Paul as Pollon had the other RBI.
Shelbey Cornelson allowed two hits in seven innings of work as she struck out nine. The senior from Tuttle, Okla., majoring in exercise science, now owns a 19-2 record on the year.
In the second portion of the double header, an accumulation of inclement weather suspended the game as the Stars held a 6-2 lead in the fifth thanks to two RBIs from Paul, and one each from Mason and Crabaugh.
The Stars' next scheduled game is Tuesday vs. Mid-America Christian with the first pitch of the doubleheader set for 2 p.m. at Ann Lacy Stadium.
