MARSHALL, Mo. – Oklahoma City University's Cade Manion garnered most outstanding wrestler of the Missouri Valley Open after winning the 141-pound title Saturday at the Burns Athletic Center.
Cooper Mahaffey collected second place for the Stars at 133 pounds. Manion, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., studying criminal justice, captured the first men's wrestling open tournament title of his college career.
Manion, ranked eighth among NAIA 141-pounders, rolled to five victories in the tournament. Manion posted three falls. In the championship final, Manion (19-2) dumped Owen Uhls, an unattached individual from Missouri, in 5:38.
For his semifinal win, Manion prevailed over Zeke Seltzer, also from Missouri, 8-6. Manion also pinned Wyatt Cooley from Westminster (Mo.) in 3:28. Manion started the day with the quickest fall of his career against Hieu Vuu from Fontbonne (Mo.) in 36 seconds. Manion finished runner-up in last season's Missouri Valley Open.
Mahaffey went 3-1 on the day. Mahaffey, a junior finance major from Yukon, Okla., edged Ethan Woods of Saint Mary (Kan.) 4-3 to advance to the championship bout. Mahaffey (17-10) battered Thomas Gunion from Avila (Mo.) 17-0 in a technical fall in the second round of the event.
Oklahoma City prepares for the postseason, which starts Feb. 18 in the American Midwest Conference-Sooner Athletic Conference Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.
