OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University ousted Texas Wesleyan from the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament 90-80 on Thursday night at the Eagles Nest.
The Stars' Avery Jackson turned in his fifth 25-point showing of the season. OCU (17-12) reached the SAC Tournament semifinal 8 p.m. Monday against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City.
Jackson, a freshman political science major from Frisco, Texas, notched 25 points and eight rebounds. Dravon Clayborn, a senior business administration major from Evanston, Ill., numbered 20 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Parker Jones, a sophomore business administration major from Russellville, Ky., recorded 17 points and six rebounds while shooting 7-for-10 from the floor.
The Stars' Kori Guest, a senior criminal justice major from Tulsa, Okla., posted his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Jackson, a junior human performance major from Westmont, Calif., added 11 points and five rebounds.
OCU unleashed a 13-0 onslaught to move ahead on the scoreboard. Clayborn fueled the Stars romp by knocking in three 3-pointers in a row. Clayborn's third consecutive trey gave OCU a 37-34 edge with 4:26 left, then Avery Jackson rebounded and went coast-to-coast for a lay-in to cap the run. The Stars led 39-34 with 4:00 left while overcoming an early 18-9 deficit.
With 10:23 remaining in the game, Jones nailed a 3 that gave the Stars a 69-48 advantage. Brandon Jackson downed a trey that pushed OCU's lead to 83-62 with 4:04 left.
