OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell short to Wayland Baptist (Texas) 74-70 on Monday night in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament semifinals at the Gaulke Activity Center.
Wayland Baptist came up with a 10-0 run in the final four minutes of the game to rally its way into the conference tournament title game. Wayland Baptist faces Langston, ranked fifth in the NAIA, at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Gaulke Activity Center. OCU went to 17-13.
Dravon Clayborn sparked Oklahoma City with 23 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Clayborn, a senior from Evanston, Ill., majoring in criminal justice, shot 8-for-12 from the field.
Kori Guest, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., studying criminal justice, pitched in 12 points and seven rebounds, while Avery Jackson, a freshman from Frisco, Texas, majoring in political science, turned in 11 points and four rebounds for the Stars.
Zach Lerblance sank a layup to put OCU ahead 68-62 with 3:43 left. Tedrick Wolfe had back-to-back buckets, including a jumper to tie the game for Wayland Baptist 68-68 with 1:09 to go. Parrish Hewitt knocked in a lay-in to give the Pioneers the lead with 21 seconds showing, then added a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining.
With 11:26 left, Parker Jones threw down a slam dunk to push the Stars' advantage to 61-44, OCU's largest lead of the night.
The Stars canned their first five 3-point attempts of the second half as Clayborn, Guest, Avery Jackson and Brandon Jackson hit treys.
