OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City men's basketball team lost its fourth straight game after suffering an 82-59 defeat to Wayland Baptist on Thursday night.
Oklahoma City (2-7, 0-4) got off to a strong start going toe-to-toe with the number ten team in the country as
Brandon Jackson delivered a pair of field goals to start the game and
Jack McWilliams went a perfect 4-4 from the line to bring the game to a 12-10 score.
Wayland Baptist (6-2, 2-1) stretched its lead out to 21-10 after a 9-0 run to gain control. Down by 11 here came the Stars as it looked like OCU was heating up from the field. Freshman
James Cloud ignited a 6-0 run all by himself going 1-2 from the line, adding a pull-up jumper, and capping it off with a big-time three to cut into the deficit and make it a five-point game.
Once again Wayland Baptist returned the favor and tallied up an 11-0 run led by Tahjae Hill who completed the half with 11 points.
Brandon Jackson also concluded the first half with 11 points as Jackson knocked down a three as the buzzer sounded to cut the deficit down to 11 as Wayland took a 38-27 lead into halftime.
Midway through the second half of play, OCU began its way back as the Stars trailed by 10. Oklahoma City scored seven straight points as
Clayton Jewell,
Brandon Jackson, and
Parker Jones all contributed to cutting the deficit down to just three, the smallest it had been since trailing by two with 13:40 to play in the first half.
Just as Wayland did all night when the Stars threw a punch the Pioneers would come back with three of their own. Wayland brought the lead back up to double-digits with just under seven minutes to play and it never fell to any less than 10 for the rest of the way.
The Pioneers closed out the game on a 16-4 run as the Stars only scored four points in the final 5:24. Wayland finished the game with five players in double-figures as Linton Brown led the way with 20 points and six rebounds.
Senior
Brandon Jackson was the only Star to crack into double-figures as Jackson notched 21 points and six rebounds while sinking two threes.
Parker Jones had one of his best games of the season scoring eight points and playing a full 20 minutes in the second half.
Nick Bonifay came off the bench giving the Stars plenty of life with a season-high of seven points while shooting 50% from the field.
Oklahoma City had another disappointing night shooting the basketball as the Stars shot 33.9% overall while going 5-31 from deep.
OCU dropped its third straight meeting with Wayland Baptist as the all-time series stays in favor of the Pioneers 21-15.
The Stars won't have much time to think about this one as OCU will get set to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 3:45 PM inside Abe Lemons Arena for the final home contest before heading into Christmas break.
