OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Stars men's basketball team edged out a close victory in the final seconds as
Brandon Jackson knocked down the game-winning free throws with 1.9 seconds to go to give the Stars an 80-78 victory.
Oklahoma City (3-7, 1-4) opened up with a 14-2 lead as
Yorgio Golesis got his big day started with five points in the first three and a half minutes to help push the Stars out to a 12-point lead.
Oklahoma Panhandle State (4-4, 2-2) got as close as seven points midway through the first half but the Stars came right back at the Aggies stretching its lead out to as large as 16 points led by Golesis with 10 in the half along with
Avery Jackson,
Brandon Jackson and
Jack McWilliams scoring six each.
OPSU caught fire coming out of the halftime break as the Aggies used four three-pointers in the first six minutes to crawl back to within five after using an 11-0 run to cut into the deficit.
Oklahoma City held a 57-51 lead with 10 minutes to go but the Aggies' Joe Greaves knocked down back-to-back treys to give the game its first tie since it was 2-2. OPSU took its first lead of the night on the ensuing possession, capping off an 8-0 run heading into an OCU timeout.
From nine minutes on neither team snatched a lead by more than three as each squad took turns on who was in front. Three lead changes and six ties made up the final 8:33 as the tight contest dwindled to be anybody's game.
Tied up at 72 with 3:17 to go sophomore
Avery Jackson stepped up for the Stars scoring the next six OCU points all by himself to give the Stars a 78-76 lead with 46 seconds to go. After tying it up and getting a stop the Aggies had the ball on their end with an opportunity to win the game.
On the throw-in, a foul was called on OPSU forward Anthony Kwessi which put the Stars best free throw shooter and senior
Brandon Jackson at the line. Jackson knocked down both attempts from the stripe and put the Stars up by two.
Having to go the full length of the court with under two seconds remaining Oklahoma Panhandle State needed to draw up a miracle. Heading down the sideline Joe Greaves took the halfcourt shot as time expired which flew over the backboard and clinched an 80-78 victory for OCU on Saturday evening.
Freshman
Yorgio Golesis had a career day with a season-high and team-high 20 points along with five rebounds and four assists on 8-12 shooting.
Avery Jackson helped put the Stars in a position to win the game after having a 12-point second half with 18 points overall on the day. Jackson tied a team-high with eight rebounds while shooting 4-5 from the charity stripe.
Brandon Jackson went without a three-pointer today but that didn't stop the senior from making a major impact on the Stars by scoring 15 points while shooting 5-6 from the foul line including the pair to win the game after playing the full 20 minutes in the second half.
Parker Jones and
Nick Bonifay each tallied six points as Jones tied
Avery Jackson for the lead with eight rebounds while Bonifay played a season-high 23 minutes and provided a clutch three-pointer down the stretch.
OCU secures back-to-back wins over OPSU going back to last season as the Stars move the all-time series record to 7-5 in favor of Oklahoma City.
OCU will have plenty of time to rest up before being back in action on Dec. 30 against Bethel College inside Abe Lemons Arena at 2 PM.
