Game Preview: Oklahoma City Men's Basketball vs Central Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Stars men's basketball team will return back home for a four-game home stand as the Stars are set to take on Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Central Christian College out of McPherson, Kan.

About the Stars

  • Oklahoma City enters after dropping its first two Sooner Athletic Conference matchups to John Brown (73-91) and to number three Langston (51-85).
  • The Stars biggest win so far comes by way of defeating number 15 The Master's University in the Abe Lemons Classic back in early November. 
  • OCU is led in scoring by sophomore guard Avery Jackson who is scoring 18 PPG and reached a season-high mark 25 points in the tight loss to Ottawa (Ariz.) back Nov. 9. 
  • The only senior on this Stars squad Brandon Jackson follows in next with 16.7 PPG and comes in as the teams leading rebounder with 6.0 a game.  
  • Oklahoma City is seeing a youthful movement amongst its team with four freshman getting 13 minutes or more in Yorgio Golesis, Clayton Jewell, James Cloud and Beau Tranter. Freshman from Salt Lake City, UT., Golesis, has cracked into the starting lineup in the past couple of games giving OCU 8.7 PPG. 
About the Tigers
  • Central Christian will be entering Saturday's contest with a 3-3 record and an 0-1 start in SAC play after a 71-73 overtime loss to John Brown on Thursday. 
  • The Tigers come in on a three game losing streak after falling to Manhattan Christian College (74-78) and then to McPherson College (65-79).  
  • Central Christian brings in three guys scoring in double-figures with sophomore guard Chris Whitten leading the way with 20.3 PPG while averaging 34.2 MPG. Whitten got off to a hot start to begin the season 25, 28 and 27 in the first three games.
  • Following Whitten, junior guard Omari Maulana is scoring 14.8 PPG while shooting 46.4% from the field. Finally, junior Javarrick Butler gives the Tigers 11.5 PPG while bringing down the second-most rebounds per game with 6.4. Butler saw his top performance come back on Nov.3 against Kansas Christian where Butler went for a double-double scoring 17 points to go along with 12 boards.
Meet the Coaches
  • Mark Berokoff (3rd Season) 
    • Mark Berokoff is in his third season at the helm for the Stars coming off a 17-13 in the 2022-23 season while finishing third overall in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Berokoff, previously a three-time national champion at Randall University holds a 36-31 overall record at Oklahoma City
    • Before Randall, Berokoff served as an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech, Texas State, and Hill College. Berokoff contributed to one of Louisiana Tech's finest seasons with a 24-11 record and a berth in the College Insider Tournament quarterfinals.
    • At the high school level, Berokoff had a career record of 225-77 in 10 years of coaching, including winning the California Interscholastic Federation Championship. He also was involved with the Los Angeles Rockfish AAU team where he coached more than 50 future Division I players.
    • In 2005, he became the vice president of operations and head coach of the Lincoln Generals in the All-American Professional Basketball League (AAPBL). Other highlights include coaching at the prestigious ABCD Camp led by legendary Sonny Vaccaro and helping establish the 1Dream Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides educational opportunities for foreign athletes.
 
  • Tony Romero (11th Season)
    • Tony Romero is entering his 11th season as the head coach for Central Christian College.  Romero served as an assistant for the Tiger basketball program for the five seasons prior (2004-2009).  Romero and his staff guided the Tiger's to 187 wins in the last ten seasons, including wins over nationally ranked teams and sightings in the NAIA national rankings off and on throughout those years. 
    • Romero served as an assistant for the Tiger basketball program for the five seasons prior (2004-2009).
    •  As a player, Romero was a guard for the Tiger basketball team from 2000-2004.  He was a four-year starter for the Tigers and during his playing career at CCC, he was voted "Newcomer of the Year," was a team captain three years in a row and was voted All-Conference MCAC player his senior season.  Romero also earned records on the court as one of Central's career leader in points, three point field goals made and free throws made.
    • Coach Romero grew up in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Del City High School in May 2000. 
Series History 
  • Oklahoma City holds an overall 10-2 record over Central Christian in the all-time series dating back to 2018.
  • OCU currently holds a five-game winning streak over the Tigers where in the previous meeting a season ago Avery Jackson and Brandon Jackson combined for 31 points, 14 rebounds and six steals. 

What's Next

  • Oklahoma City will stay inside the doors of Abe Lemons arena for another week as the Stars will play host to number 10 in the national Wayland Baptist on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7:45 PM.
