Game Preview: Oklahoma City Women's Basketball at Langston

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Stars women's basketball team picks things back up on Thursday at Langston to finish off a three-game road trip.

About the Stars

  • Oklahoma City enters Thursday's matchup on a four-game skid most recently dropping its conference opener to John Brown 70-46. 
  • The Stars lone victory came in their season-opener to Wiley College 79-53 coming back on Nov. 2. 
  • Amaya Gordon has been the top performer for OCU through the first five games as Gordon leads the way with 13.8 PPG and 8.8 RPG. Gordon has collected a pair of double-doubles so far this season and has scored in double-figures in four of the five games. 
  • Cacie Gorman has played a solid role inside for the Stars averaging 6.6 RPG and strung together a big night in the game against Sterling College with 12 points and 10 rebounds. 
  • The pair of freshman guards in Myracle Washington and Jerzie Bryant have been a bright spot for this Stars team as Washington averages 10.6 PPG and leads the team in made three-pointers. Washington has reached double-figures in four of the five games this season and wasted no time making a name for herself after dropping 18 points while going 4-7 from three-point range in her OCU debut against Wiley College.
  • Bryant comes in second on the team in scoring with 11.0 PPG while also hauling in 5.0 RPG. Bryant had a big day in the Stars homecoming game against Friends University on Nov. 11 with 18 points, six rebounds, and five steals while sinking three shots from range. 

About the Lions

  • Langston is off to a 5-1 start suffering its only loss to the University of Pikeville on Nov. 24 by a score of 78-62. 
  • The Lions are coming off a win over Bluefield University 92-62 and open up their conference slate against the Stars on Thursday. 
  • Langston defeated Kansas Wesleyan back on Nov. 4 78-65 which became significant as the OCU and KWU met back on Nov. 8 where the Coyotes outlasted the Stars 68-47.
  • Langston is led by senior forward Hailey Jordan who averages team-highs in scoring (15.5 PPG), field goal percentage (55%), and three-point percentage (66%). Jordan has reached double-figures in all six games seeing her season-high performance come against Bethany with 21 points. 
  • Junior guard Kamesha Moore leads the Lions in minutes played and comes in second with 13.5 PPG. 

Meet the Coaches

  • Kris Seigenthaler (2nd Season)
    • Kris Seigenthaler enters year two at the helm for Stars after posting a 13-15 record in 2022-23. Seigenthaler arrived at Oklahoma City after a successful stint as an assistant coach at Loyola (La.). 
    • In four seasons with Loyola, Seigenthaler helped the Wolfpack sweeping the Southern States Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships for two consecutive years. Loyola advanced to the NAIA Championship Tournament and posted 20-win seasons all four years. The Wolf Pack went 91-22 (.805 winning percentage) with her contributions.
    • Seigenthaler coached four NAIA all-Americans, two Women's Basketball Coaches Association all-Americans as well as student-athletes who won conference player of the year, defensive player of the year, newcomer of the year, sixth man of the year, and two conference tournament most valuable player awards at Loyola.
    • Before joining the Loyola coaching staff, Seigenthaler spent two years as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.). She coached one all-American there. She assisted with the school's transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference after being a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) for 17 years. While with the Warhawks in 2017, she was also recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on its Thirty Under 30 list.  

  • Kevin Herod (2nd Season)
    • Kevin Herod was introduced as the head women's basketball coach for the Langston University Lady Lions in May 2022. Herod comes to Langston University after serving eight seasons as head coach at Talladega College.
    • Herod comes off a 17-13 season in his first year with the Lions and gained a semifinal appearance in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament after taking down two-seeded Mid-America Christian 59-58.
    • During his time at Talladega College, Herod posted a win-loss mark of 171-68 in eight seasons. The win-loss mark was the most wins of any HBCU women's basketball head coach over that period. 
    • In the 2021-2022 season, the Lady Tornadoes finished the overall season with a 21-12 record and received a bid to the NAIA National Tournament. Defeated #13 ranked Providence in the first round.
    • In the 2020-21 season, the Lady Tornadoes finished the year at 16-3 (COVID year) and 5-1 in the GCAC. For the second year in a row, they were named GCAC Regular Season Conference Champions. The Lady Tornadoes were ranked as high as 14th in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll throughout the season, which marked the sixth consecutive year the Lady Tornadoes were ranked since the 2015-16 season.
    • In the 2019-20 season, the Lady Tornadoes posted an outstanding regular season as they went 28-5. Talladega went undefeated in the GCAC regular season (14-0) claiming the GCAC Regular Season Championship and nationally ranked #10 in the country. Herod was also named to the 2019-2020 Achieving Coaching Excellence College Basketball Coaching Honor Roll.

Series History 

  • Oklahoma City holds a 16-4 record against Langston dating back to the first-ever meeting between the two schools in 2009. 
  • The Stars are coming off of a win in the previous meeting with the Lions back on Jan. 26, 2023, by an 81-79 decision. 

What's Next

  • Oklahoma City continues SAC play on Saturday afternoon to face Central Christian at 2 PM inside Abe Lemons Arena.
