SILOAM SPRINGS, ARK. - The Oklahoma City Stars men's basketball team dug themselves a deep hole late in the first half and struggled to climb out of it as John Brown ran away with a 91-73 victory in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday night.
Oklahoma City (2-4, 0-1) had four players score in double-figures as most of the first half went back and forth between the two squads. John Brown (3-3, 1-0) hit its stride in the final 3:30 of the first half as the Golden Eagles took a 20-4 run into the halftime break.
OCU came out in the second half seeing more struggles from the field as the first basket for the Stars came at the 17:10 mark from
Yorgio Golesis. John Brown extended its lead up to 28 points at 69-41 but the Stars refused to go down looking as Oklahoma City began chipping its way back.
The Stars turned in a 22-6 run to bring the deficit down to 12 as back-to-back field goals for
Clayton Jewell brought the score to 75-63. Unfortunately, John Brown came right back at Oklahoma City and ran away with the lead as OCU fell victim to a four-minute scoring drought and only scored 10 points in the final 8:29 of the game.
Once again
Brandon Jackson led the way for Oklahoma City with 19 points and six rebounds. Jackson went 6-7 from the foul line and saw his immaculate streak of 28 straight free throw makes come to a close with a miss late in the second half.
Avery Jackson dropped 14 points on 5-13 shooting while leading the team with seven rebounds. Freshman
Yorgio Golesis tallied 13 points while shooting 50% from the field.
Oklahoma City shot an adequate 41.9% from the field but struggled from range as the Stars went 6-24 from three-point land with five of the six makes coming from
Brandon Jackson and
Avery Jackson. John Brown was cooking from everywhere all evening showcasing a 50% shooting night while sinking 11 threes as the Golden Eagles own Malachi Reeves netted four of them.
John Brown held the edge inside the paint by a 50-47 margin over OCU while the Golden Eagles forced 14 turnovers and scored a season-high 91 points which also became the most Oklahoma City has allowed this season.
Oklahoma City drops its second in a row to John Brown, however despite the loss, OCU holds a 20-17 record over the Golden Eagles dating back to 2007.
The Stars will have a quick turnaround as the Stars stay on the road in Sooner Athletic Conference play against highly ranked Langston on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7:45 PM.
