Stars go down to nationally ranked Southwestern Assemblies of God in three sets

WAXAHACHIE, TEXAS - The Oklahoma City Stars volleyball team open up in control but struggle to finish as SAGU earns the sweep over OCU and takes the season series.

Set 1    

Oklahoma City leaped out to a 3-0 lead and was even able to extend its lead to 7-2 after a pair of kills from the junior Ruby Kelley. The Lions clawed their way back cutting the deficit to one however OCU came right back with another kill from Kelley to go back ahead by three at 16-13. SAGU kept it close but every time the Lions tied it OCU answered and went back ahead. Gabrielle Fjeseth and Natalie Adams both added kills to keep OCU in control. With OCU out in front 24-23 and having a chance to put the first set to bed SAGU rattled off three straight points and took its first lead of the entire set at 25-24 with the set-winning point to follow for the Lions to secure the late win in beginning set.  

Set 2    

SAGU came out firing in the second set opening up with an 8-2 run to force Oklahoma City to take a timeout. Kelley and Michela De Stefano tallied a kill each, but SAGU was able to turn in a 5-1 run and go up 14-6. Trailing 23-10 OCU put up a strong fight and scored the next five of seven points on kills from De Stefano and Fjeseth however the SAGU lead was just too much to overcome as the Lions claimed a 25-15 win. 

Set 3     

After taking a 1-0 lead on a kill from Rylee Steward to start the third set the Lions ran away with a 13-1 run to take a commanding lead of 13-2. Trying to find their back, Emma Nickerson, Hannah Grundy, and Marina Kalajdzic all added kills to help the Stars pull within eight as SAGU led 17-9. Down by 10, the Stars put together a 4-1 run to inch a bit closer as Kelley and Fjeseth added a kill a piece. SAGU then closed out the third set by outscoring Oklahoma City 3-1 as Alexandra Bonnett finished things off with a match-point kill to give the Lions a 25-16 victory.  

Game Notes    

  • Oklahoma City totaled 26 kills on a .038 hitting percentage while SAGU held the edge with 36 kills on a .190 attack percentage. 
  • OCU finished with 51 digs as SAGU dropped 53 on 10 blocks while OCU finished with nine blocks.  
  • OCU tallied three aces while SAGU notched 11 which was the second most OCU has allowed this season.  
  • Ruby Kelley led the Stars with eight kills on a .211 attack percentage followed by Gabrielle Fjeseth with seven kills on a .278 hitting percentage.   
  • Natalie Adams led the match with 21 assists while also picking up six digs and one service ace.  
  • SAGU earns a season sweep over the Stars after previously winning in three sets back on Sept. 15 in Oklahoma City. 
  • The Lions have now won four straight over OCU however the Stars still hold a 20-8 lead in the all-time series dating back to 2006. 

NEXT GAME    

Oklahoma City will continue its road trip as the Stars will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 26 against Central Christian in McPherson, Kan.
