OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University outlasted Science & Arts 20-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-7 on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City remained undefeated in three-set matches this year, moving to 3-0 in such contests. The Stars improved to 5-5, 3-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball.
In the fifth set, Michela De Stefano and Catelyn Vargas combined on a block to put OCU on top 4-0. De Stefano and Vargas each had kills as the Stars scored the first four points of the set.
Emma Nickerson and Rylee Steward teamed on a block to give the Stars an 8-3 advantage. Ruby Kelley and Gabrielle Fjeseth each had kills as OCU had the final three points of the match.
In the fourth, OCU rolled to nine consecutive points to break a 9-9 tie. Fjeseth contributed a kill and a block to key the Stars' effort.
Kelley's block provided Oklahoma City with a 15-6 lead and capped a 6-0 surge in the third set. OCU completed a comeback from two sets down.
Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., registered 13 kills, 16 digs and three blocks, while Vargas, a senior from Lubbock, Texas, turned in 13 kills, two aces and two blocks.
Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., recorded 12 kills and five blocks, and Kaitlyn Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, scooped up 28 digs with six assists for the Stars. Emma Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., posted 25 assists and 11 digs, whlie Cassidy DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, added 18 assists and five digs.
The Stars face Mid-America Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Gaulke Activity Center.
