Stars drop match to Southwestern Assemblies of God

OCU challenges pair of top-25 foes over weekend

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell to nationally-ranked Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 25-13, 17-25, 25-20, 25-16 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. 

Southwestern Assemblies of God, ranked 10th in NAIA volleyball, remained undefeated at 16-0, 8-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Stars went to 7-8, 5-3 in the SAC. 

Kaitlyn Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, scooped up 15 digs, while Ruby Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., produced six kills, 13 digs, four blocks and two aces for OCU. 

Cassidy DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, supplied Oklahoma City with 12 assists and six digs, and Emma Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., posted 10 assists, 13 digs and three aces. Rylee Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., collected seven blocks, and Hannah Grundy, a junior from Oklahoma City, added five kills and four blocks. 

In the second set, the Stars built a 10-5 lead using a 4-0 run sparked by Kelley's service ace and a combined block by Michela De Stefano and Steward. OCU built an 18-9 advantage with six consecutive points capped by De Stefano's kill and DeShong's ace.  

In the fourth set, Oklahoma City had a 5-0 run to cut its deficit to 16-14. Kelley and Steward teamed on a block to complete the OCU spree. Southwestern Assemblies of God answered with six points in a row, moving ahead 23-15. 

OCU plays the first of four away matches in a row against Panhandle State at 6 p.m. Friday in Goodwell, Okla.
