OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University recorded a 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 win over John Brown (Ark.) on Wednesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Rylee Steward boasted of her career high with 14 kills. Oklahoma City stayed undefeated in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball play, moving to 4-1, 2-0 within the league.
In the third set, OCU erased a 5-1 deficit early and a 20-18 deficit late. Emma Nickerson and Catelyn Vargas put the Stars in front for good 22-21 with a block.
In the first set, the Stars came back from a 16-12 hole. Nickerson provided the kill that put OCU ahead 22-21. In the second, OCU came up with the final five points of the set. Vargas and Ruby Kelley nailed the kills that gave the Stars the set.
Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., posted a .778 hitting percentage. Vargas, a senior from Lubbock, Texas, delivered 10 kills, while Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., registered six kills, 18 digs and two blocks for the Stars.
Emma Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., picked up 21 assists and two aces, and Kaitlyn Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, provided OCU with 14 digs. Cassidy DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, dished out 14 assists.
The Stars take on Cornerstone (Mich.) at 9 a.m. Friday in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic in Bellevue, Neb.
