CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University came through with a 25-21, 19-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-8 win over Tabor (Kan.) on Saturday at Chickasha High School in the Mid-America Christian-Science & Arts Cruisin' Classic.
Ruby Kelley delivered a team-high 12 kills. The Stars concluded the weekend tournament with a 2-1 mark.
In the fifth set, Oklahoma City seized a 6-3 lead with three unanswered points. Gabrielle Fjeseth and Marina Kalajdzic teamed for a block, and Emma Vance had an ace to give the Stars the lead for good in the final set.
The Stars answered after Tabor cut OCU's lead to 8-6. Riley Winkler nailed a kill, then Kaitlyn Dunlap served up an ace. Rylee Steward smacked a kill to give OCU an 11-6 advantage. Winkler landed an ace to clinch the win for Oklahoma City.
OCU extended the match to a fifth set by taking the fourth set. The Stars reeled off a decisive 6-0 run to move ahead 17-13. Kelley crushed two kills and combined on a block with Steward during that critical span. OCU closed the set with a 5-1 run as Kelley's kill forced the fifth set.
Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., added 16 digs and three blocks as well as six kills during the fourth set. Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, picked up 26 digs, and Cassidy DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, produced 24 assists and five digs for OCU.
Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., turned in 21 assists and eight digs. Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., and Emma Nickerson, a junior from Frisco, Texas, supplied the Stars with 10 kills and four blocks each. Jordan Ashley topped OCU with four aces.
Oklahoma City opens Sooner Athletic Conference play 6 p.m. Aug. 30 at Abe Lemons Arena.
