OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University trampled Wiley (Texas) 25-8, 25-20, 25-18 on Friday afternoon at the Gaulke Activity Center in the Mid-America Christian-Science & Arts Cruisin' Classic.
The Stars (1-1) fell to Oklahoma Wesleyan 17-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-19 in the early match of the day. Oklahoma City meets Tabor (Kan.) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Chickasha High School.
Against Wiley, OCU reeled off a 13-0 run to move ahead 21-4 in the first set. Ruby Kelley served up three aces, including one to cap the onslaught. Gabrielle Fjeseth notched three kills during the spree.
The Stars piled up 15 aces as Kelley posted a team-best six. Cassidy DeShong had four aces, while Hannah Grundy landed three aces for OCU.
Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., produced 10 kills and eight digs, and DeShong tallied 15 assists and five digs. Rylee Steward provided the Stars with nine kills and three blocks, while Kaitlyn Dunlap scooped up 13 digs. Emma Vance dished out 14 assists.
Against Oklahoma Wesleyan, Riley Winkler came up with three aces to build a 8-1 first-set advantage for the Stars. Fjeseth and Steward combined on a block to put OCU on top 19-7.
Kelley spearheaded Oklahoma City with 13 kills, five digs and four blocks. Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., added six kills and seven blocks, and Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, accumulated 23 digs. Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., tacked on 15 assists and nine digs, while DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, had 15 digs and five digs.
