OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University knocked off Grambling 10-3 on Friday at Hall of Fame Stadium in the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic for its first victory over an NCAA Division I softball team since 2006.
Oklahoma City (15-0) blanked McPherson (Kan.) 3-0 to go 2-0 on the day. The Stars, ranked fourth in the NAIA, last collected a win over an NCAA Division I squad 7-6 against Arkansas on March 16, 2006 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Against Grambling, OCU plated six runs in the first inning. Amy Crabaugh bunted towards third base to allow Brooklyn Mason to reach home plate for a 6-0 Stars advantage.
Kaitlyn Jones smacked an RBI single to right field to push OCU's lead to 7-0 in the second.
In the third, Tiffany Paul crushed a two-run double deep to right to make the Stars' cushion 10-0.
Shelbey Cornelson went to 8-0 with the win. Cornelson, a junior from Tuttle, Okla., struck out seven and kept Grambling scoreless until the fifth.
Since defeating Arkansas, Oklahoma City went 0-3 against NCAA Division I competition including a two-game set against Abilene Christian on March 18, 2014 in Abilene, Texas.
On Friday night, Nicole Robinson of OCU broke a scoreless tie by pounding a triple to center field in the fifth inning.
The Stars added a pair of runs in the seventh. Carlee Mollet nailed an RBI triple to right, and Robinson added a run-scoring single along the left-field foul line.
Lexi Duff and Cornelson teamed on a no-hitter. Duff (7-0) fanned five in 5.2 innings. Cornelson earned a save by pitching the last 1.1 innings.
OCU continues play in the Red Dirt Classic on Saturday against Kansas Wesleyan at 9 a.m. and Texas A&M-San Antonio at 2 p.m.
