FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Shimales Abebe of Oklahoma City University achieved A standard qualifying marks for the NAIA men's indoor track & field championships in the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters in the Tyson Invitational on Saturday at the Arkansas-Randall Tyson Track.
Abebe has met the A standard for the national meet in three events this season. Abebe, a sophomore from Los Angeles, ran a qualifying time in the mile Jan. 28 in the Washburn Open.
In the 3K, Abebe delivered the NAIA's top time in the event of 2021-22 of 8 minutes, 3.58 seconds. He reeled in a third-place finish.
Abebe took the 5,000-meter race by finishing in 14:02.35 seconds. Abebe's time ranks No. 2 in the NAIA on the season.
The NAIA indoor championships will be March 3-5 in Brookings, S.D. OCU's final tuneup before the national meet will be in Kansas State's Steve Miller Open on Friday in Manhattan, Kan.
