DALLAS – Oklahoma City University failed to overcome a slow start in a 76-69 loss against Paul Quinn (Texas) on Monday night at the Paul Quinn Wellness Center.
Avery Jackson, a freshman from Frisco, Texas, keyed the Stars with 16 points. OCU's record fell to 3-5.
The Stars trailed 12-0 early on.
Avery Jackson's bucket accounted for OCU's first points six minutes in. The Stars cut the lead to five with four minutes left in the first half coming off four points each by
Jack McWilliams and
Avery Jackson's 3-pointer.
The Stars came to life in the second half cutting the lead to six after one of
Avery Jackson's three 3-pointers early on. The Oklahoma City comeback continued with
Parker Jones cutting the lead to two with 10 minutes left. Paul Quinn seemed to respond each time the Stars tried to make a comeback. OCU's last chance came with a two-point game after
Kori Guest's two buckets with 2:15 left. Paul Quinn never trailed in the game and went on a 7-1 run to end it.
OCU upped its field-goal percentage to 48.4 percent in the second half. Paul Quinn owned the rebounding advantage 38-31, but OCU committed five less turnovers.
The Stars leading scorers were
Avery Jackson and
Brandon Jackson with 16 points and 15 points, respectively.
Brandon Jackson supplied a game-high seven rebounds.
Kori Guest was the third Star in double figures with 13 points.
OCU's next game is at Langston at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in Langston, Okla.
