LANGSTON, Okla. – Oklahoma City came up short to Langston 62-55 on Thursday night at the C. Felton Gayles Field House.
Kori Guest of the Stars led all scorers with 18 points. Langston, ranked 15th in NAIA men's basketball, remained undefeated at 8-0, 4-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while the Stars moved to 3-6, 1-2 in the SAC.
The Stars had the early 12-8 lead seven minutes into the game, but it quickly dwindled as the Lions flipped the script in under two minutes and led 22-14. The Lions continued their momentum and jumped out to a 10-point lead with 1:30 left. Guest ended the first half on fire as he nailed two 3s and a pair of free throws in the final 1:16. His final 3 was a buzzer beater.
The Lions started the second half off with a 3. Guest responded moments later with a trey of his own. He ended up with five 3s in total. Lions controlled the lead until six minutes left in the game. Dravon Clayborn made a jumper to cut the lead to one, and Guest tied it with a free throw. With 4:21 left, OCU tied it again off more free throws by Clayborn.
Langston made the shots when it counted. Coming out of the timeout Dean Toru made a shot, then A.J. Rainey hit a 3 to lead by five. OCU's last chances were stolen away after Toru snagged the ball away from Clayborn with 30 seconds left.
The Stars' shooting percentage dropped almost in half in the second half, down to 27.8 percent compared to the first half's 44.4 percent. OCU was outrebounded by nine, and OCU had two more turnovers.
Guest, a senior criminal justice major out of Tulsa, Okla., shot 5-for-10 from 3-point range and supplied one steal and four rebounds. Brandon Jackson, a junior from Westmont, Calif. tallied 15 points and seven boards. The third Star in double figures was Clayborn, a senior business administration major out of Evanston, Ill., with 11 points and two steals.
OCU will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they face off against Central Christian (Kan.) at 3:45 p.m. inside Abe Lemons Arena on Military Day.
