CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University dropped an 81-80 decision to Science & Arts at Drover Fieldhouse on Saturday night.
Avery Jackson's jumper at the buzzer rimmed out after USAO took the lead with Samkelo Cele's made free throw with seven seconds left. Jackson, the freshman from Frisco, Texas, went the length of the court, lost the ball for a second and gathered it in time to get a good shot off. The ball bounced off the backboard and rimmed out. OCU dropped to 3-4, 1-1 on the year.
The second half began tied at 36, but the Drovers quickly took a 69-56 advantage, their largest of the game. Down by 13, the Stars started their comeback on 3-pointers by Avery Jackson and Brandon Jackson. The Drovers stopped the Stars comeback after they cut the deficit to three with just under seven minutes left. Once the Stars hit 66, the Drovers went on a 7-0 run to lead 77-66.
The Stars mounted their next comeback by going on a 10-3 run on a couple of layups by Avery Jackson and Zach Lerblance plus a 3-pointer by Dravon Clayborn. Avery Jackson tied the game 80-80 on a bucket with 13 seconds left before the Drovers game-winning foul shot.
The leading scorer for the Stars was Brandon Jackson, a junior from Westmont, Calif., with 27 points. He also supplied five boards and a block. Avery Jackson had 20 points, four rebounds and one steal. Clayborn, a senior from Evanston, Ill., had a double-double with 15 points and a game- and career-high 12 rebounds. Zach Lerblance, a junior from McAlester, had himself a career-high 10 points off the bench and was key in the Stars' comeback.
Despite the Stars' 23 points off turnovers and the Drovers 18 turnovers, the Drovers had 12 fast break point compared to the Stars two. Science & Arts outrebounded the Stars 45-35.
The Stars' next game will be at Paul Quinn (Texas) at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28 in Dallas.
