OCU vs. Southwestern Assemblies of God women's basketball preview

Stars compete in first of two home dates this week

THE MATCHUP 
 

• Oklahoma City University continues a three-game week with a Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tilt against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 
• The Stars are in the midst of their only week with three league games in a week on the schedule. This contest will be the first of a two-game set at home for OCU 
• Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for students. All tickets must be purchased via OCU's HomeTown Ticketing portal. No tickets are to be purchased via cash on site. OCU students, faculty and staff gain admission to all OCU regular-season home athletics events free of charge with their ID 
• Fans will be required to wear masks in place over their faces while observing social distancing. No concessions will be offered 
 
ABOUT THE STARS

• John Brown (Ark.) knocked off Oklahoma City 87-69 on Tuesday in Siloam Springs, Ark. The Stars (12-7, 7-7 SAC) took their first road loss of the season, moving to 7-1 in away games in 2021-22 
Abby Selzer, a 6-foot-2 senior from Thomas, Okla., reached 20 points for the third consecutive outing and seventh time this season with 20 points and nine rebounds at Bill George Arena. She shot 8-for-11 from the field and hit all four of her free-throw tries. Selzer collected the fourth SAC player of the week nod of her career after averaging 27.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.50 steals per game during the week of Jan. 17-23 and breaking the 1,500-point mark. Selzer turns in 18.7 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.47 blocks a contest while shooting 67.1 percent from the floor to rank No. 1 in the NAIA on the season. She brought her career totals to 1,562 points and 685 rebounds 
• Paige Pendley, a 5-9 junior from Elgin, Okla., racked up 12 points, five rebounds and four assists Tuesday night. She contributed her eighth double-digit scoring performance of the season. Pendley provides OCU with 8.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest 
• The Stars have knocked in 17.9 free throws per game to hold the No. 2 spot in the NAIA this season 
• Oklahoma City has captured nine national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 and finished as national runner-up four times (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2019)  
• The Stars took third in the preseason SAC poll. Oklahoma City owns 20 SAC regular-season titles and 12 SAC Tournament championships. Since 2007-08, OCU has gone 249-29 (.896 winning percentage) in conference play
• Oklahoma City has forged a 15-1 all-time record against Southwestern Assemblies of God. The Stars won in a romp 85-59 on Dec. 4 in Waxahachie, Texas. Selzer posted 15 points and eight rebounds 
 
ABOUT THE LADY LIONS 
 
• Southwestern Assemblies of God absorbed an 80-52 loss at the hands of Science & Arts on Saturday in Waxahachie, Texas. The Lady Lions (7-13, 4-10 SAC) mustered their season-low point total
• Autumn Moore, a 5-8 freshman, had 17 points and seven rebounds. Moore averages 8.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this season 
• The Lady Lions put up 26.0 3-point attempts a game to rank 19th nationally
• Conference coaches placed SAGU at 10th within the SAC in the preseason league poll 
   
MEET THE COACHES 
 
Brett Tahah (17-5, second season with OCU) 
• Tahah is the first former OCU student-athlete to serve as head coach of the program 
• As a player from 2002-10 she helped lead the team to a 63-10 record, two conference championships and two NAIA Fab Four appearances 
• Tahah compiled a 117-50 head-coaching record with two state tournament semifinal berths in six years at Oklahoma high schools Frontier, Elgin, Hobart and Lookeba-Sickles  
 
Michael Sons (10-23, second season with SAGU) 
• Career spans 24 years mainly in the Christian school environment; he came to SAGU having had a long and successful career as a high school and AAU coach 
• While coaching in four different states, Sons has amassed over 520 wins at the high school level, received a State Coach of the Year award, Region Coach of the Year award, and numerous District Coach of the Year accolades
