OCU at Langston men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP

• Oklahoma City University will attempt to secure a season sweep over Langston when the two teams face each other on Saturday afternoon at LU's C.F. Gayles Field House. The Stars recorded their best offensive outing of the season in a 100-71 victory over the Lions on Nov. 20 at Abe Lemons Arena
• With that win, OCU improved to 24-6 in the all-time series against Langston. The Stars stand at 3-2 in the series in games played at Langston. LU's last win in the series was an 88-85 decision on Jan. 2, 2020 on its home court
• OCU enters Saturday's game in fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings with a 7-4 record, only a half game behind Texas Wesleyan at 8-4. Langston is in 12th place with a 0-13 record

ABOUT THE STARS

• Oklahoma City (9-10,8-4 SAC) enters Saturday's game having won three of its last four games. The Stars are coming off a hard-fought 60-57 win over Central Christian on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena. CCCK started the game with a 7-0 run but OCU never trailed after taking a 11-10 lead at the 12:51 mark of the first half.  
• Senior forward Romario Spence recorded his third straight and seventh double-double of the season with a 20-point, 14-rebound performance in the win over Central Christian. The effort ties his best offensive outing of the season and ranks as his second-best night on the boards. Spence recorded 20 points and 16 rebounds in an 83-80 loss to McPherson College on Oct. 30.
• Senior guard Ryan Birt contributed 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds in the win over CCCK. He has now scored in double-figures in four straight games and 10 games for the season
• Senior guard Dravon Clayborn came off the bench to contribute six points and five rebounds in the win.
• OCU recorded a season-high 54 rebounds in the win, finishing with a 54-46 rebounding advantage over the Tigers. The plus-8 rebounding edge is the third best for the Stars this season, topped only by a plus-19 edge in the first game against Central Christian and a plus-16 advantage in a win over Langston.
• After limiting CCCK to 3 of 31 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, OCU leads NAIA in 3-point field goal defense (97 of 396, 24.5%).
• OCU ranks ninth in the SAC in team offense (72.1 ppg) and seventh in team defense (73.1 ppg).
• The Stars took the eighth spot in the preseason SAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. OCU owns 13 SAC regular-season championships and 10 SAC Tournament titles. Oklahoma City has advanced to the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament 25 times all-time and has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008
 
ABOUT THE LIONS

• Langston (1-17, 0-13 SAC) dropped a 101-56 road decision to John Brown on Thursday night.
• Sophomore guard Lacorian Ballard led the Lions with 13 points and five rebounds in that loss.
• LU is winless in Sooner Athletic Conference play with only one of those loses being decided by single-digits, a 73-65 setback to Mid-America Christian on Jan. 15.
• Junior guard Armani Allen leads the squad and ranks third in the SAC in scoring (17.4 ppg). He ranks 11th in the conference in field goal percentage (42.5%).
• Langston ranks 12th in the SAC in team offense (63.0 ppg) and team defense (81.4 ppg).

Mark Berokoff (first season with OCU)
• Mark Berokoff guided Randall to three national championships and a national runner-up finish in nine years as head coach of the Saints. Berokoff's record with Randall was 147-122. Randall • Berokoff coached five national player of the year honorees, 16 all-Americans, three national tournament outstanding player award winners and one scholar all-American with Randall. Berkoff was two-time national coach of the year
• Berokoff's coaching career includes experience on the high school, college and professional levels. His combined head-coaching record over 19 years in the college and prep ranks is 372-199
