Stars Overcome 14-Point First-Half Deficit To Post Overtime Win Over Texas Wesleyan

OCU stops Texas Wesleyan winning streak at five games with 80-72 victory

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fought back from a huge first-half deficit to post a monumental 80-72 Sooner Athletic Conference overtime men's basketball win over Texas Wesleyan on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
 
Texas Wesleyan (14-4, 7-3 SAC) started the game with an 18-4 run before OCU (8-9, 7-3) slowly chipped away to cut Texas Wesleyan's halftime lead to 40-31.
 
The Stars took their first lead of the game at 46-45 on a jumper by junior guard Eric Amandio at the 12:22 mark of the second half. Texas Wesleyan would answer by going on a 9-1 run to take a 54-47 lead at the 8:03 mark.
 
OCU fought back again, taking its second lead of the game at 65-64 on a 3-pointer by junior forward Kori Guest at the 2:48 mark. The game went back and forth at that point with TXWES taking a 67-66 lead on a free throw by Vydal Bradford with 28 seconds remaining in regulation. Star senior guard Rashaun Coleman sent the game into overtime by making one of two free throws with four seconds remaining.
 
The Stars outscored the Rams 13-5 in overtime, making 5 of 7 field-goal attempts and 3 of 4 free throws. Junior forward Dadrian Hoambrecker pushed OCU to an insurmountable 77-69 lead with a dunk at the 1:53 mark of the extra period.
 
Both teams played the game short-handed with seven players available on each side. All five TXWES starters played 38 minutes or more and four of OCU's five starters played 35 minutes or more. Coleman and Guest played all 45 minutes for the Stars.
 
Coleman finished with a team-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists for the Stars. Guest contributed a season-high tying 22 points and Hoambrecker finished with 11 points. Guest and Hoambrecker tied for the team lead with seven rebounds.
 
OCU made 29 of 66 field goal attempts (43.9%), marking their fourth best shooting night of the season. The Stars also finished with a season-low seven turnovers.
 
OCU returns to action on Saturday for a showdown against No. 15-ranked Science & Arts. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. at Abe Lemons Arena.
