BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University knocked down Southwestern Christian 25-12, 25-12, 25-17 on Friday night at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
Catelyn Vargas recorded a team-best 11 kills. Oklahoma City, ranked 19th in NAIA volleyball, upped its record to 4-4, 3-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Vargas, a junior from Lubbock, Texas, served up a team-leading two aces. Sophia Salak, a senior from McKinney, Texas, scooped up her third double-double in four contests with 31 assists, 12 digs and two blocks for the Stars.
Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, provided OCU with nine kills and 12 digs, and Josie Thomas, a freshman from Choctaw, Okla., accumulated 21 digs.
Olivia Nutter, a senior from Plano, Texas, totaled eight kills and four blocks, while Kenady Bertling, a senior from Baytown, Texas, notched three blocks for the Stars.
Oklahoma City erased a 10-5 deficit in the third set. Vargas smacked a kill, and Hannah Grundy and Rylee Steward teamed on a block to spark a 5-0 run that put OCU on top 13-11.
The Stars reeled off six points in a row to move ahead 20-15. Nutter posted three kills to spur on OCU, while Vargas chipped in an ace and a kill during the Stars' surge.
In the second set, Vargas nailed a kill to give Oklahoma City a 21-9 advantage.
To begin the match, the Stars rolled to a 10-0 lead. Vargas turned in a two kills and combined with Bertling on a block during OCU's onslaught. Salak landed an ace, and Lofton capped the run with a kill. Nutter recorded a kill and a block to increase the Stars' margin to 19-8.
Oklahoma City hosts Langston at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Stars' first home match of the season.
