FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University collected its first win of the season 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 over Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday night at the Sid Richardson Center.
Ella Lofton delivered 13 kills for the Stars. OCU, ranked 19th in NAIA volleyball, evened its record at 1-1, 1-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Kristen Coventon hauled in her 50th victory as head coach of the Stars. Coventon has guided OCU to a 50-10 record in her third year and owns a 136-93 mark in her eighth season as a head coach. Oklahoma City prevailed in a matchup of the two teams who have made the SAC Tournament championship match the past four years.
Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, added six digs and two aces. Sophia Salak, a senior from McKinney, Texas, rang up 39 assists and eight digs for Oklahoma City.
Olivia Nutter, a senior from Plano, Texas, provided the Stars with nine kills, and Isabel Harwell, a senior from Edmond, Okla., tracked down a team-best 12 digs. Ruby Kelley, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., knocked down eight kills, while Josie Thomas, a freshman from Choctaw, Okla., contributed 10 digs for OCU.
Kenady Bertling, a senior from Baytown, Texas, added five kills and two blocks, while Catelyn Vargas, a junior from Lubbock, Texas, chipped in four kills for the Stars.
Oklahoma City faces Dickinson State (N.D.) at 9 a.m. Friday in Bellevue, Neb., in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic. The Stars take on sixth-ranked Concordia (Neb.), 11th-ranked Central Methodist (Mo.) and No. 17 Montana Tech this weekend.
