BELLEVUE, Neb. – Oklahoma City University opened play in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic with a victory over Dickinson State (Neb.) before falling in a top-25 matchup against Concordia (Neb.) on Friday at the Lied Activity Center.
The Stars, ranked 19th in NAIA volleyball, rolled to a 25-8, 25-17, 25-22 win over Dickinson State, but sixth-ranked Concordia prevailed 25-13, 25-21, 25-22 over Oklahoma City (2-2).
OCU has two more clashes with rated foes set for Saturday. The Stars meet 17th-ranked Montana Tech at 11 a.m. and 11th-ranked Central Methodist (Mo.) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Labor Day Classic.
Sophia Salak moved past Hannah Mitcham into No. 2 on Oklahoma City's career assists list Friday. Salak, a senior from McKinney, Texas, completed the day with 2,546 assists to surpass Mitcham's 2,514 she collected from 2012-15. Erin Hirt holds OCU's career assist record with 3,035 accumulated in 2006-07.
Against Concordia, the Stars led 20-16 in the third set after Ella Lofton smacked a pair of kills.
Lofton crushed a kill to put OCU on top 22-21, but Concordia responded with the final four points to secure the win.
Lofton rang up 14 kills and six digs, and Salak accumulated 33 assists for the Stars.
Olivia Nutter tallied seven kills, while Josie Thomas reeled in 10 digs. Catelyn Vargas chipped in five kills and three blocks, and Ruby Kelley pounded five kills for Oklahoma City.
Against Dickinson State, Nutter, a senior from Plano, Texas, led OCU with 11 kills, while Salak dished out 41 assists.
Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, turned in 10 kills and five digs, and Kenady Bertling knocked down 10 kills for Oklahoma City. Kelley, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., nailed eight kills.
OCU's Isabel Harwell totaled nine digs, while Thomas, a freshman from Choctaw, Okla., racked up seven digs. Vargas, a junior from Lubbock, Texas, contributed seven kills.
