Stars reel off pair of wins

OCU takes victories over Our Lady of the Lake, Wayland Baptist

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University wrapped up its fifth consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season volleyball championship with a 19-25, 25-16, 30-28, 25-22 win over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday at the Hutcherson Center.
The Stars, ranked 19th in the NAIA, took the No. 1 seed in the SAC Tournament with an unbeaten mark in league play for the second season in a row. Oklahoma City (11-2, 10-0 SAC) also knocked off Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 25-23, 25-12, 27-25 at the Hutcherson Center.
OCU ran its winning string in conference matches to 36 consecutive victories. The Stars secured the right to host the SAC Tournament in the forthcoming season by winning the 2020-21 SAC regular-season title.
Against Wayland Baptist, Sophia Salak piled up 59 assists, 14 digs and two blocks, while Lacy Beeler spearheaded OCU with 19 kills, 15 digs and two blocks. Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, reached 50 assists for the eighth time as a Star and came up one assist shy of her career high vs. Providence (Mont.) on Dec. 3, 2019 in the NAIA Championships.
Olivia Nutter and Catelyn Vargas knocked down 13 kills each, and Ella Lofton provided the Stars with 12 kills and 12 digs. Nutter had three blocks.
OCU's Caitlin Briggs tracked down 16 digs, and Isabel Harwell notched 13 digs and two aces. Kenady Bertling pounded nine kills.
In the third set, Vargas nailed a kill to put Oklahoma City on top 6-1. OCU came up with the final three points of the set as Beeler smacked a pair of kills followed by Harwell's ace.
Against Our Lady of the Lake, Beeler, a senior from Jenks, Okla., turned in 14 kills and nine digs. Salak accumulated 41 assists, nine digs and five aces.
Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, tallied 10 kills, while Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, recorded nine kills and 14 digs.
Briggs, a senior from Mustang, Okla., picked up 12 digs, and Bertling, a junior from Baytown, Texas, added eight kills.
In the second set, OCU got out to a 7-0 lead as Beeler had a pair of kills.
Beeler crushed two kills at the end of the third set to clinch the victory for OCU.
The Stars meet Langston at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals.
