OCU pulls off win at Panhandle State

Stars remain unbeaten in league play

GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma City University slipped past Panhandle State 27-25, 25-20, 22-25, 20-25, 15-11 on Friday night at Anchor D Arena at Oscar Williams Fieldhouse.
OCU overcame a 7-3 fifth-set deficit to win. The Stars, ranked 19th in NAIA volleyball, improved to 9-2, 9-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Stars secured the victory by scoring the last five points of the match unanswered. Kenady Bertling sparked the closing OCU run by smacking a kill, then Ella Lofton added a pair of kills, including the clinching kill.
Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, accumulated 16 kills, 19 digs, five assists and two aces, while Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, posted 41 assists, 15 digs, six blocks and three aces for Oklahoma City.
Catelyn Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, supplied OCU with 12 kills and two blocks, and Lacy Beeler, a senior from Jenks, Okla., contributed 10 kills and eight digs. Olivia Nutter, a junior from Plano, Texas, turned in nine kills and seven blocks, while Isabel Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., picked up 12 digs and two aces.
Caitlin Briggs, a senior from Mustang, Okla., scooped up 10 digs, and Bertling, a junior from Baytown, Texas, chipped in seven kills and four blocks for the Stars.
In the first set, Vargas nailed a kill to deny Panhandle State the set and tie the score 24-24. Bertling served up an ace, and Beeler crushed a kill to give OCU the set.
Oklahoma City finishes the regular season against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 11 a.m. and Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Plainview, Texas.
