OCU knocks out Our Lady of the Lake

Stars move on to NAIA Championships on April 27-May 1

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rolled past Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 25-20, 25-16, 25-14 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in the NAIA Volleyball Championship Opening Round.
The 21st-ranked Stars (15-2) reached the NAIA Championships on April 27-May 1 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The pool-play brackets will be unveiled 5 p.m. Sunday.
Ella Lofton collected 12 kills, 16 digs and three aces to propel Oklahoma City. Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, notched her fourth double-double in a row and ninth double-double overall. Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, rang up 39 assists, six digs and two blocks.
Catelyn Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, supplied OCU with 10 kills and two blocks, while Isabel Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., registered 19 digs and two aces. Lacy Beeler, a senior from Jenks, Okla., contributed five kills and 12 digs.
"We are so excited to get that win," OCU coach Kristen Coventon said. "I love the change for the national tournament this year. You have to win the Opening Round and earn your way in. I definitely think we earned it."
Olivia Nutter, a junior from Plano, Texas, topped the Stars with seven blocks. OCU piled up 10 team blocks for its fourth contest this season with double-digit team blocks.
"That was one of the best blocking games we've had all season," Coventon said. "Catelyn and Ella really played well taking care of the ball and scoring at a high percentage. I'm hoping we can use this to give us a good start in Iowa."
Down 15-14 in the first set, OCU reeled off four points in a row in response. Harwell came up with two consecutive aces, and Beeler's kill put the Stars ahead 18-15. Lofton knocked down a kill to provide OCU with set point 24-20.
The Stars built a 12-3 advantage in the second set as Bertling and Lofton turned in three kills each.
In the third set, Lofton and Nutter teamed on a block to put OCU on top 20-10. Lofton touched off a 4-0 surge with a solo block.
