Stars close season in NAIA Championships

OCU concludes 2020-21 in national-tournament pool play

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Oklahoma City University fell twice in the NAIA volleyball championships Tuesday at the Tyson Events Center.
The 21st-ranked Stars (15-4) dropped a 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 15-6 decision to fifth-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) and fell to No. 13 Corban (Ore.) 25-18, 28-30, 25-14, 25-15.
Against Northwestern, OCU took two of the first three sets. In the third, the Stars pulled ahead with four consecutive points. Catelyn Vargas nailed two kills to spearhead OCU.
The Stars held a 4-2 edge in the fifth set as Lacy Beeler pounded a kill. Northwestern responded with a 5-0 surge to take the lead for good.
Beeler, a senior from Jenks, Okla., totaled 19 kills, 19 digs and two blocks, and Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, posted 13 kills and 12 digs for the Stars. Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, accumulated 49 assists, nine digs and two blocks.
Isabel Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., supplied OCU with 22 digs and three aces, while Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, had 15 kills and two blocks.
Kenady Bertling, a junior from Baytown, Texas, added seven kills, and Olivia Nutter, a junior from Plano, Texas, contributed six kills and five blocks.
OCU rallied to take the second set against Corban. Vargas hammered two kills and combined with Bertling on a block to tie the set 24-24. Nutter and Bertling posted kills to secure the set.
Vargas topped the Stars with 11 kills, and Lofton turned in 10 kills and 13 digs.
Salak provided 41 assists, four digs and three blocks, while Beeler contributed nine kills and 13 digs.
Harwell scooped up 16 digs with two aces, and Caitlin Briggs collected 13 digs and two aces.
