Stars fall to Oklahoma Baptist

OCU absorbs first loss of 2020-21

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 setback to Oklahoma Baptist on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma Baptist, ranked 11th in NCAA Division II volleyball, remained unbeaten at 9-0, while the Stars, ranked 16th in the NAIA, went to 4-1. OCU met a ranked NCAA Division II team for the first time in program history.
Oklahoma City took on Oklahoma Baptist for the first time since Nov. 14, 2014 in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals. Oklahoma Baptist ended OCU's home winning streak at 38 matches as the Stars fell at Abe Lemons Arena for the first time since Oct. 21, 2017, when OCU lost 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 to Our Lady of the Lake (Texas).
Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, supplied OCU with 12 kills, eight digs and two aces, and Isabel Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., scooped up 24 digs. Harwell reached 20 digs for the second time this season and 14th time in her career.
The Stars' Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, notched 30 assists, three digs and three kills, while Caitlin Briggs, a senior from Mustang, Okla., picked up 11 digs. Hannah Grundy, a freshman from Oklahoma City, added six kills and seven digs.
In the first set, Olivia Nutter pounded a kill to help OCU cut its deficit to 19-18. Oklahoma Baptist answered with the next three points and back-to-back kills.
Grundy had a kill and a service ace to slice the Oklahoma Baptist second-set edge to 22-20. Oklahoma Baptist responded with a kill and an ace.
Lofton nailed a kill to tie the third set 20-20. Oklahoma Baptist came up with the next three points.
The Stars return to SAC play against Central Christian (Kan.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in McPherson, Kan.
