OCU notches win over Southwestern Christian

Stars turn in 16 aces

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University trounced Southwestern Christian 25-13, 25-8, 25-12 on Thursday night at the Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
Kenady Bertling, a junior from Baytown, Texas, paced OCU with 10 kills and two blocks. The Stars, ranked 16th in NAIA volleyball, went to 4-0, 4-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, posted 31 assists, six digs and six aces, while Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, collected eight kills, eight digs and two blocks for Oklahoma City.
The Stars' Catelyn Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, crushed eight kills, and Isabel Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., netted nine digs and four aces.
Hannah Grundy, a freshman from Oklahoma City, picked up seven digs and four aces, while Olivia Nutter, a junior from Plano, Texas, added five kills and two blocks. OCU served up 16 aces, its most since piling up 16 aces at Central Christian (Kan.) on Nov. 1 in McPherson, Kan.
Vargas nailed a kill to put the Stars up 10-3 in the first set.
Grundy notched all four of her aces during an 11-0 spree that gave Oklahoma City a 19-7 advantage in the second set.
In the third, OCU scored the first six points. Harwell had back-to-back aces, and Lofton socked a kill to cap the Stars' onslaught.  
Oklahoma City takes on Oklahoma Baptist, ranked 11th in NCAA Division II, at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars put their 38-match home winning streak on the line.
