Stars topple Mid-America Christian

OCU collects five consecutive straight-set win in SAC play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed over Mid-America Christian 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 on Thursday night at the Gaulke Activity Center.
Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, led OCU with 14 kills. The Stars, ranked 15th in NAIA volleyball, improved to 8-1, 8-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Lofton registered a double-double for the second consecutive match and third time this season with 10 digs. Kenady Bertling, a junior from Baytown, Texas, posted 12 kills, two aces and two blocks for OCU.
Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, turned in her second double-double of 2020-21 with 38 assists, 15 digs and three aces. Isabel Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., provided Oklahoma City with her third 20-dig effort of the season with 20 digs, four assists and three aces.
OCU's Caitlin Briggs, a senior from Mustang, Okla., rang up 17 digs, while Catelyn Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, notched eight kills and a block.
The Stars overcame an 18-13 first-set deficit. OCU answered with four points in a row with Bertling serving up a pair of consecutive aces. Bertling and Lofton combined on a block to regain the lead for OCU 22-21. The Stars tallied the last three points of the set as Lofton nailed a couple of kills in a row. Hannah Grundy clinched the set with a kill.
In the second set, Oklahoma City erased a 10-4 Mid-America lead. The Stars scored four points in a row in response. OCU reeled off a 5-0 late surge to make up a 20-18 hole. Lofton crushed three kills, and Harwell recorded an ace. Bertling pounded a kill to put away the set.
The Stars raced out to an 8-1 cushion in the third set. Bertling and Lofton smacked two kills each, and Salak rang up two aces. Mid-America Christian cut the OCU lead to 23-20, but Olivia Nutter and Lofton came through with kills for the Stars.
Oklahoma City has added an away match against McPherson (Kan.) at 5 p.m. Friday in McPherson, Kan.
