OCU tramples USAO

Stars break program mark with 20 aces

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dispatched of USAO 25-10, 25-16, 25-13 on Monday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars served up a team-record 20 aces. Oklahoma City, ranked 15th in NAIA volleyball, moved to 7-1, 7-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU surpassed its previous mark for aces in a contest of 19 set Oct. 26, 2016 against USAO at Abe Lemons Arena. Isabel Harwell notched nine aces to lead the Stars. Harwell fell one ace shy of the Stars' record of 10 aces by Caitlin Chamness vs. USAO on Oct. 26, 2016 at Abe Lemons Arena.
Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, posted her second double-double of the season with 12 kills, 12 digs and an ace for OCU. Sophia Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, turned in 33 assists, five aces and three blocks, while Harwell, a junior from Edmond, Okla., tracked down nine digs.
Catelyn Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, supplied the Stars with eight kills and two blocks, and Caitlin Briggs, a senior from Mustang, Okla., totaled five digs and two aces.
Kenady Bertling, a junior from Baytown, Texas, accounted for five kills, three blocks and an ace, while Hannah Grundy, a freshman from Oklahoma City, contributed two aces. Hanna Nicholson, a senior from Choctaw, Okla., knocked down five kills for the Stars.
OCU reeled off a 9-0 run in the first set. Harwell registered four aces, and Lofton smacked a pair of kills to help the Stars build a 23-8 advantage.
In the second set, Lofton pounded two kills, and Salak picked up a pair of aces to put OCU ahead 15-9. Grundy's ace gave the Stars a 22-12 lead.
Harwell reeled off four consecutive aces as OCU rolled to an 8-0 cushion on the outset of the third set.
Oklahoma City meets Mid-America Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday in an away match at the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City.
